1. Scope

This procedure covers the detail of buffing work, for cleaning and brightening of stainless steel
surface.

2. Preparation

a. Polished plate material of ASTM A480 No. 2B finish or equal shall be used where buffing
is required.

b. Prior to buffing work no scratch is permitted on the surface to be buffed.

c. No sharp edges nor sharp corners are permitted.


Care must be taken for both design and fabrication so that there is no portion where
buffing finish is not obtained.

d. Welding shall be ground flush where to be buffed. No under cut is permitted.

e. Any defects, such as scratch, under cut etc, shall be removed completely by grinding.
Deposit welding may be used in case such defect is large.
Scratch due to rough grinding shall be removed using fine grade grinder.

f. Prior to buffing, the equipments shall be inspected to ensure that all parts and surface are
adequate to be buffed.

3. Execution

a. Parts which is difficult to be buffed after assembled, such as small size nozzle, shall be
buffed separately prior to assembly.

b. Buffing work shall be carried out from rough grade to fine grade step by step.
Prior to start of next stage it shall be conformed that no defects and no scratches due to
rough grade buffing remained on it

c. The final finish buffing work shall be carried out in the same direction.

d. After buffing work is completed, all the surface shall be cleaned using solvent to remove
remaining buffing compound, oil and other foreign matter.

e. All items shall be finished to the following buff grade.


ASTM A480 No. 8 Finish “Mirror Finish ".
