Purpose of the Course/ Learning Outcomes:

Upon successfully completing this course, the student will be able to:
 Explain the five functions of supervision and the difference among management
levels in terms of skills needed and functions performed.
 Describe conceptual, human, and technical skills and their relevance for
supervisors.
 Explain the four parts of the writing objectives model.
 Describe how to use planning tools and use selected tools in an application.
 Understand the priority determination model.
 Explain and use the steps in the delegation model.
 Explain Total Quality Management.
 Describe the steps in the problem solving and decision making model.
 Describe how to develop good relations with your boss, peers, subordinates, etc.
 Explain the guidelines for effective constructive criticism.
 Demonstrate characteristics of active listening.
 Explain how to deal with and emotional employee.
 Explain and use the situational characteristics model.
 Explain the five conflict management styles and the appropriate use of each.
 Give examples of questions you can and cannot ask during and interview.
 Identify steps in interview preparation and interviewing.
 Identify common causes of accidents and how to prevent them.
 Describe ways to improve productivity.
 Understand performance appraisals and how to conduct them.
 Define problem employees and how to handle them.
 Demonstrate how to plan for and conduct effective meetings.
 Describe the five steps in the discipline model and know how to apply them.

Grading Criteria

4 tests @ 100 points each 400 points


Term Paper 200 points
Oral Presentation 100 points
Class Attendance 100 points for 4 or less absences, 50 points
for 5-6, 7 or more absences = 0 points
Shares (3 at 25 points) 075 points

Total Points 875 points

Final Grade

Final grade will be determined as follows:

90 – 100% = 4.0 70 – 74% = 2.0


85 – 89% = 3.5 65 – 69% = 1.5
80 – 84% = 3.0 60 – 64% = 1.0
75 – 79% = 2.5 59 or below = 0

Academic Dishonesty

Please read the College’s position on academic dishonesty in the KVCC Student

Attendance

You are expected to come to class. Attendance will be taken at each class. If you are not
in class, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed by checking Moodle.
Students who attend class regularly have the least amount of difficulty in class.

Instructor

Please come to see me if you have any questions. I want you to succeed and will be glad
to talk with you about your grade at any time. Drop by my office or set up a special
appointment. I am here to help you!

Late Tests

No Late Tests Will Be Given. If you have an excused illness or an unusual


circumstance, please notify me in advance and be prepared to provide written
documentation. Pre-planned vacations are not excused absences!

Supervision Share Assignment

Your Share Assignment consists of providing four (3) supervision related


items to share with the entire class. You must use one visual per share.

Please note that you cannot share on test dates and/or the last two
classes of the semester.

Please see our class schedule for valid share dates. Note: it is your
responsibility to track your number of and dates of your share items.

Example of share items include:

A Code of Conduct from an employer

Newspaper or magazine supervision related article

A synopsis of a CNBC special regarding a business

An example of your employee benefits

A job description from a prospective employer

Web related articles involving benchmarking or best practices

ANYTHING related to Supervision.

Please keep your sharing to one or two minutes so that we can fit everyone
in this semester.

Term Paper

Using your class text book, please choose a couple of topics for your term paper and be
prepared to sign up for your topic of choice on the second day of class.

Examples:

Supervision as it relates to: Quality control, cultural diversity, team building and leading,
business ethics, motivation techniques, improving productivity, discipline, human
resources, appraising performance … If you have another idea for a topic, please let me
know.

Using two additional sources, which must be cited on a separate sheet, write a 4-6 page
paper expanding on your topic. Please, no longer than seven pages!!

You may and are encouraged to integrate personal experiences into your paper.

Please note that your paper should be double spaced. Please use a 12pt font and standard
margins. A cover page is required.

Your paper will be graded as follows: TOTAL 200pts

Content: 150 pts

Spelling, grammar, and organizational structure: 50 pts

Please contact the Learning Center at 488-4397 for assistance with reading/writing and
math. One-quarter of your term paper grade depends on professional writing skills.

Your term paper is due at the beginning of class on the date it is due. Please see me with
any questions. Good luck and good learning! There will be a 10 point reduction per day
for late papers.

Term Paper Presentation

Near the end of the semester, you are required to provide a brief summary of your term
paper to the class. Please see the attached score sheet. Please also note that your
presentation should be between 2 and 3 minutes in length. Note: Do Not Simply Read
Your Term Paper!
