    Gerund

    Gerund is a Noun which is formed by a Verb + ing


    Gerund can function as a Subject, an Object, Object of a preposition (in, on, at, of, from,
    about, with, without, by, before, after), Object after some certain verbs*, or as a
    Complement.
    Sentence pattern :
    Verbal : S + V + O + Adverb
    Non Verbal : S + auxiliary (to be) + Complement ( N/ Adj? Adv)
    Examples:
    a. Swimming makes us healthy. ( gerund as a Subject)
    b. Angga likes playing football. (gerund as an Object)
    c. We are interested in drawing and painting. (object of a preposition)
    d. They enjoyed singing together last night. ( Gerund as an object after certain verb:
    enjoy)
    e. Her hobby is gardening. (gerund as a Complement)

    Complete these sentences with a suitable gerund.


    1. Would you mind opening/closing the door, please? Thanks
    2. When Beth got tired, she stopped working
    3. The weather will get better soon. We can leave as soon as it quits raining
    4. The police officer told him to stop, but the thief kept running
    5. I’m thinking about preparing a dinner party with my old friends.
    6. My brother told a very funny joke that we couldn’t stop laughing
    7. Sometimes I delay doing my homework.
    8. Have you considered planning for vacation this summer?
    9. Jack almost had an accident, yet he could avoid crashing/hitting/bumping another
    car at the crossroads.
    10. We wanted to go to Mexico, but Sally suggested going to Hawaii.
    11. He tried to avoid replying my question.
    12. Could you please stop making so much noise?
    13. I enjoy listening to music.
    14. I considered taking/accepting/applying for the job but in the end I decided against it.
    15. Have you finished washing/coloring/combing/drying your hair yet?

    HOMEWORK:
    Make sentences using gerund:
    1. As a Subject : Jogging in the morning makes us fit and fresh
    2. As an Object : We hate quarrelling.
    3. As an Object after a preposition : He left without saying goodbye
    4. As an Object after a certain verb : My father quit smoking last year.
    5. As a Complement : Agus’ duty is cleaning the teacher room.
