IELTS ACADEMIC MODULE

The IELTS Academic Module can be used for undergraduate or postgraduate study or for professional reasons.

Reading

Time 1 hour

Three different texts and a total of 40 questions. The texts are authentic and academic in
Description nature, but written for a non-specialist audience. The texts may be descriptive or
argumentative, and at least one of them contains detailed logical arguments.

Assessment Each question is worth one mark

Writing

Writing Task 1: 20 minutes (150 words)


Time
Writing Task 2: 40 minutes (250 words)

Writing Task 1: Describe and summarize visual information. The information may be
presented on a diagram, map, graph or table.
Description Writing Task 2: Write an essay. You will be given an opinion, problem or issued that you must
respond to. You may be asked to provide a solution, evaluate a problem, compare and
contrast different ideas or challenge an idea.

Writing Task 2 is worth twice as much as Writing Task 1.


You will be assessed on the following criteria:
 Task achievement
Assessment
 Coherence and cohesion
 Lexical resource
 Grammatical range and accuracy

Listening

Time 30 minutes (plus 10 minutes to complete the answer sheet)

Section 1: conversation between two people about a general topic.


Section 2: monologue about a general topic.
Description
Section 3: conversation among 2-3 people in an academic context.
Section 4: monologue in an academic context.

Each question is worth one mark.


Assessment
You will hear the recording only once.
Speaking

Section 1: 4-5 minutes


Time Section 2: 3-4 minutes
Section 3: 4-5 minutes

Section 1: questions on familiar topics (e.g. hobbies)


Section 2: you will be given a booklet with a topic and some suggestions. You need to talk
Description
about 1-2 minutes. You have 1 minute to write notes before you begin.
Section 3: more detailed and abstract questions about the topic in Section 2.

You will be assessed on the following criteria:


 Fluency and coherence
Assessment  Lexical resource
 Grammatical range and accuracy
 Pronunciation
