1. Question No. 1 is Compulsory.
2. Answer any FOUR from questions 2 to 8.
3. All parts of a Question must be answered in one place to get valued.

1. Answer the following in 4 or 5 sentences.

2 Marks
a) Show that heat added at constant volume for a closed non-flow process manifests as
internal energy change.
2 Marks
b) Let PVδ = Constant, what is the value of δ for an isochoric process?
2 Marks
c) Convert 9.8 N-m/Kg to Kgf-m/Kg?
2 Marks

h) What is throttling? Give an example.

2. a) What is first law of thermodynamics? Apply it to a flow process with a neat sketch. 5 Marks
b) Steam flows at steady state through a converging, insulated nozzle, 25 cm long and with 6 Marks
an inlet diameter of 5 cm. At the nozzle entrance (state 1), the temperature and pressure
are 598.15 K (3250C) and 700 kPa, and the velocity is 30 m/s. At the nozzle exit (state 2),
the steam temperature and pressure are 513.15 K (2400C) and 350 kPa. Property values are :
KJ
H 1  3112 .5 V1  388.61cm 3 / g
Kg
KJ
H 2  2945.7 V2  667.75cm 3 / g

b) A reversible cycle executed by 1 mol of an ideal gas for which Cp=(5/2)R and Cv=(3/2)R 7 Marks
consists of the following:
 Starting at T1=700K and P1=1.5 bar, the gas is cooled at constant pressure to T2=350K.
 From 350K and 1.5 bar, the gas is compressed isothermally to pressure P2.
