The document describes various guitar exercises and licks focusing on hybrid picking, double stops, and bending. It provides notation and instructions for practicing scales, arpeggios, and techniques across several pages.

A hybrid picking exercise is demonstrated that trains picking fingers to match in sound and intensity when playing notes with a pick and fingers. Variations using different finger combinations are suggested.

Double stops are two note chords played simultaneously on adjacent strings. An A major scale played in thirds using the 2nd and 3rd strings is demonstrated and practiced with single, double, and triple picking patterns as well as adding ghost notes.

JOHNNY HILAND: EXERCISES & LICKS

Nashville super-guitarist, Johnny Hiland, is known for his amazing

hybrid picking, quick scales, and country licks. Here are a few of his
favorite exercises.

HYBRID PICKING EXERCISE

This is a great exercise to train your fingers for hybrid picking. Try to get
the notes played with a pick and those played with the fingers to match
in sound and intensity.

The circled numbers on top are the fretting hand fingers.

The notes with stems down are to be played with a pick.

The notes with stems up are to be plucked by the middle finger in a hybrid picking motion.

Other variations of this exercise would be to use fretting hand finger combinations of 1-3, 1-4, 2-3,
2-4 and 3-4. Another variation would be to alternate the picking between a pick and the ring finger.

DOUBLE STOPS IN A
Here is an A major scale played in thirds up the neck using the 2nd & 3rd strings.

The circled numbers indicate the fretting hand fingers to be used on each note.

The barred notes are to be played with a first finger barre.

The other combinations are to be played with the first and second finger combination.

SINGLE PICKING: DOUBLE STOPS IN A

Ghost notes (shown as an X) can be added to this scale to practice hybrid picking. Play the ghost
notes as a down-stroke with a pick and by lightly touching your fretting hand 3rd finger on the 4th
string. Don’t press the string down fully – just lightly touch the string with the third finger to deaden
the sound. It doesn’t matter which fret your third finger is on since it is simply deadening the string.
Play the major scale thirds with your picking hand middle and ring finger.

ADDING BENDS TO DOUBLE STOPS IN A
The bends are played two different ways. The bends with arrows down are played by bending the
3rd string down (toward the floor). The bends with arrows up are played by bending the 3rd string up
(toward the ceiling). The bends down are whole step bends. The bends up are either half or whole
step bends.

OPEN STRING SCALE D MAJOR LICK

The circled numbers are the fretting hand fingers. A circle with a “0” indicates an open string. This
lick begins in the 5th position and works down to an open position D major triad.
