Introduction
Ever since I was a kid, I enjoyed helping others and I have always felt a love for music.
As a freshman in high school, I found out that I could major in Music Education at college and
I immediately knew that it was what I wanted to do. Not only did it combine two of the most
meaningful things to me but it also gave me the opportunity to give back to the music
community that has already given me so much and the chance to affect the local community by
encouraging life-long learning and curiosity within my students.

Educational Experience
In spring semester of my sophomore year, I had the opportunity to help facilitate a
JMUke event at the Explore More Discovery Museum in downtown Harrisonburg. At this
event, I helped create an environment where students from ages 3-12 could freely learn to play
the Ukulele and other auxiliary instruments. Then, the past two seasons, I was hired to work
with the Harrisonburg High School marching band for the 2017 and 2018 season where I was
able to lead marching and music rehearsals. From these experiences, I have learned how
important it is form that connection and trust between the students by being as approachable as
possible. Without the student’s trust, not only does it make it easier for the student to disengage
with the content but it also diminishes the teacher’s ability to act as a positive role model.
Teaching Philosophy
In a world where our labor force is constantly competing in a global economy and
where technology is advancing at an exponential rate every year, I believe that it becomes the
role of the teachers and the education system to make sure that our students can not only thrive
in that ever-growing environment but also be able to constantly look for ways to innovate and
be leaders. I think that the ultimate goal for any educational program is to instill life-long
learning and curiosity within its students. By doing this, the students are beginning to be able to
think for themselves, and apply their mastery of content knowledge to solve real-world issues.
