drawings

Project: Semi detached Houses at prpopesed NSSF satellite towns at Dungu Farm, Kigamboni,
Dar-Es-Salaam.
Details of the Project
Total no of buildings: 8
No of Floors: 2
No of dwelling unit: 4
Ground Floor Area: 286m2
First Floor Area: 286m2

The main task of the day was to interpret the given architectural drawing i.e the semi daeched
house. This means to farmiliarise myself with the drawing and determine the key areas for
placement of the beams nad colums.
Before starting with the assigned project I first started with other smaller projects so as to gain
experience and knowledge. I spent the whole day going over various architectural projects, and
on each project first farmiliarized myself with the drawing, learn the use of the bulding and then
figure out the key places where placement of beams and colums are necessary.

Load analysis and design for the slab were carried out using BS.
Analysis and design was performed on only one slab and the result was assigned for all the rest.
It’s a two way slab.
Analysis was done manually
Reinforcement for the slab was calculated

After evaluating the total dead and live load acting on the slab. We

30/06/2014 Elevated Water Storage Tank

Today we were assigned the task of re-designing a 135m3 storage tank to be located in Tandale,
Temeke municipality.

Load Consideration.
The loads considered were those of the top slab, the water in the tank, bottom slab and
supporting walls(risers)
Additional lie and dead loads from the equipmentsand partitions/finishes.

Analysis Approach
In the analysis, the structure was analysed separetly to obtain the necessary reactions. It was
performed manually

Results of Analysis and Design

Dimensions obtained on analysis were as follows:
Top slab is 200mm thivk with 16 diamter reinforcement bars at a spacing of 150mm
Bottom slab is 350mm thick with 16 diameter reinforcement bars at a spacing of 100mm
Riser walls should be 460mm thick
To withstand the effect of hookes tension on the tank, it was found effective to use the same
diameter for the bars (10mm) throughout however as we move towards the base of the tank, the
number of bars should be increased. Thus the first third of the tnak should have 5 bars, the
second third of the tank should have 9 bars and the last third of the tank will have 13 bars.

30/06/2014 Elevated Water Storage TAnk

continuation of the redign of the water tank.

Firtsly the wind pressure tat would act on the tank was calculated.
From this were were able to estimate the total shear forcet that would act on the structrure, also it
was able to help us determiinre the resultant moment acting on the foot of the structur.

Foundation Works
The footing wascalculate to be 400mm thick and provided with 10mm diameter reinforcements
at 180mm spacing.

Next the footing was checked for stability i.e overturning check and slidinh check. both showed
to have a satisfactory safety of factor (greater than 1.5) hence the tank was structurally stable.

After going through the clavulations one last time and verifying all the obtained results, the
structure was approved ready for construction.

30/06/2014 Midas

Toda we started Learning how to use MIDAS/Gen.

Midas/Gen is an engineering software that helps ……………..

The aim was to farmiliarize ourself with MIDAS/GEN environment and to be become
acquainted with the procedure for using MIDAS/Gen within a short time frame.

Contents of he day are as foloows:

File opening and Oreferenced Setting
Enter Material and Section Properties
Structural Modeling Using Nodes And Elements

As an example we used the semi detavhed house at Dungu Farm in Kigamboni.

On our first day we were able to follow the step by step instructions, firstly we larent the lyout
of Midas i.e knowing the basic tools involved, the different type of units it supports, switching
from one code to another knowing the grid placement etc etc.
Secondly we were able to know how toenter the corrct material nad section properties

and finally knowing how to model the structure using nods and elements.
In this aspect we could draw the floor plan and know how to place the various beams n colums
etc etc

Continuation of Midas

Three mai lessons were taught today

Entering structure Support Conditions
Entering the Loading data
Perform Structural Analysis

Enter Structure Support Condition

Once the modeling of the structure shape is complete, we need to provide the support conditions
for all the colums

Enter Load Data

Firstly we define the various load cases examole dead load, live load, wind load snow load etc
Define the self weight of the elements
Definr the fFloor loads
Define loads concentrated on nodes(nodal loads)
Define the uniformly distributed loads

Structural Analysis
Here the model is analysed with the load cases defined previously.

Al the data entry pertaining to the modeling is feasible only in the preprocessing mode. If the
analysis is completed without any error, the mose automatically switches from the
preprocessing mode to the post processing mode.

The interpretation of the analysis results such as reactions, displacement, member forces,
