NetCam - Background information

Technical Requirements
Background information
What is NetCam is an add-In for your already installed image-analysis software. NetCam en-
NetCam? ables you to transfer live-images which the system acquired via intranet or internet
and make them accessible for other users.
How does NetCam NetCam compresses the live-images and makes them available on the NetCam
work? server for continued downloading. A HTML page is automatically created on this
server and can be accessed by a client. In turn, the HTML page contains a JavaScript
which carries out the actual transfer of the image data.

Technical Requirements for the Server

Operating system The image-analysis software runs on the Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating
systems.
Image-Analysis The appropriate image-analysis software must be installed on the NetCam server.
Software
Web Server A web server must be running with the NetCam server. If a web server can not be
found during the installation of the software with NetCam, then the Apache Webserv-
er will be installed instead. Other possibly existing web servers must be disengaged
when wanting to use NetCam. The Apache web server is automatically started when
the image-analysis software program is engaged.
IP Address Working in the intranet, the server's name can be used. During installation, NetCam
creates a link in the Module\NetCam subdirectory of the image-analysis software
which contains this name.
A valid and accessible IP address is required for using the internet. This address
should not be a temporary address. To avoid problems with name servers, it is pref-
erable to use numerical addresses.

1
Ports The communication between the NetCam server and the client(s) occurs via ports 80

• Mozilla 1.6
• Thunderbird 0.5
Java The client requires the Java 2 Runtime Environment v. 1.4.1_03 or higher.
Ports The communication between the server and client occurs via ports 80 and 5879.

Operating the NetCam client
Intranet To receive the images of a NetCam server via the intranet, you should ask the server
to send you the link. You can drag&drop this link from the email to your desktop. By
double clicking the link, your computer starts its standard browser and shows the
NetCam start screen.
Internet You need the NetCam server's IP address to receive images via the internet. This
address either consists of alphanumerical symbols ("http://Computer.Firm.com/") or
the more reliable numerical specification ("172.154.86.102"). Enter this information
into your browser's address field and add "NetCam/index.html" to it. The NetCam
start screen appears after having confirmed the address information with the enter
key.
Favorites To make the accessing of the images easier, you can add this address to your brows-
er's favorites.
Problems Should the NetCam start screen not appear, first check the addresses which you
have entered into your browser and correct them, if need be. The error can reappear
even by correct spelling if you have used the alphanumerical notation of the address.
In this case, contact the user on the NetCam server and request them to give you the
numerical address. The camera hand book describes how one is able to transfer the
numerical IP address.
