    MOVIE REVIEW: HENERAL LUNA (2015)

    “Mga kapatid, mayroon tayong mas malaking kalaban kaysa mga Amerikano--- ang ating sarili”

    This remarkable movie line is quoted from a 2015 film directed by Jerrold Tarog. The
    movie is all about patriotism and the willingness of our fellowmen to fight for our country. The
    main character, Heneral Antonio Luna, as the Americans have said, is the bravest and greatest
    general of our country in the film’s time period. The author of this movie obviously wants to
    depict the true meaning of patriotism. Heneral Luna truly represented a love for his country and
    feared no one but the government had seen him in a more reversed way which caused him to be
    a threat than the Americans. Lack of unity and treachery became the problem that greatly
    affected the country. This movie reminds us all of the sacrifices that our fellowmen did that were
    unfortunately became wasted and served no one’s justice and independence.

    The film became very effective in employing its message. The producers didn’t mind using
    vulgar words only to render the Filipino traits and characteristics before that were beautifully
    crafted. It also showed beliefs which made the movie more relatable and interesting to watch as
    it goes on. The movie didn’t fail to show how Heneral Luna became so patriotic in fighting for his
    country’s freedom against American regimen under the jurisdiction of our first president, General
    Emilio Aguinaldo. The movie also expanded my knowledge about our history and it even pushed
    me to know and research more about the past.

    We may usually think of historical movies as boring and not interesting but this movie is
    the total opposite. I would like to recognize the people behind this film for they have made this
    film to be effective yet with humor that made me appreciate more movies like this. After
    watching it, I realized that there’s so much more that the books have told us, there’s so much
    more that we don’t know and there’s so much more to believe on. However, this history that we
    are enjoying is one painted with half-truths and veiled lies.

    The unique perspective of the author and the effectiveness and versatility of the actors
    made the film great and fascinating. However, it did make us believe for a happy ending but it
    turned out to be not because of the lack of unity, our ignorance. “Bayan o sarili?” is one question
    that left us hanging for an answer as the movie closes and ends with a tragic happening.
