Applications of Machines
1. Fly Wheel
i. A flywheel is used to smooth fast angular velocity fluctuations of the
crankshaft in a reciprocating engine.
ii. Flywheels can be used to control direction and oppose unwanted
motions, like gyroscope.

iii. Flywheel sometimes used to supply intermittent pulses of

energy. Delivering the energy beyond the capability of
machine by acquiring energy to a flywheel over time, then
release it quickly e.g.: Riveting machines
2. Moment of Inertia
i.
3. Governor Apparatus
i. It is used in Aircraft propellers
ii. It is used in small engines, used to power lawn mowers, portable
generators, and lawn and garden tractors, are equipped with a
governor to limit fuel to the engine to a maximum safe speed when
unloaded and to maintain a relatively constant speed despite
changes in loading.
iii. It is used in water turbines, governors have been used since the
mid-19th century to control their speed.
4. Oscilloscope Apparatus
i. Oscilloscopes are used to measure and subsequently analyze the
operating properties of circuits, line-power harmonics, and power
conversion devices (such as autotransformers, linear regulators, and
switched-mode power supplies).
ii. Oscilloscopes are used in jitter analysis. Modern high-bandwidth
circuits have incredibly fast clocks and signals. You can use an
oscilloscope to represent, analyze, and debug signal jitter and timing
for clocking applications (clocks, clock-to-data, and data-stream
analysis).
iii. Digital data signals are moving to ever-increasing serial data
formats. Oscilloscopes are used to analyze and characterize such
data formats as USB, SCSI, Ethernet, Serial ATA, Fiber Channel,
FireWire, Rapid I/O, InfiniBand, Bluetooth and CAN Bus (for the
automotive industry).
5. Gyroscope Apparatus
i. Cruise ships use gyroscopes to level motion-sensitive devices such
as self-leveling pool tables
ii. It is used in compasses, aircraft, computer pointing devices.
iii. Gyroscopes are also used in consumer electronics (most of them are
phones). e.g.: Samsung, iPhone, HTC etc.
6. Cam and Tappet Apparatus
i. In internal combustion engines with pistons, the camshaft is used to
operate poppet valves. It consists of a cylindrical rod running the
length of the cylinder bank with a number of oblong lobes
protruding from it, one for each valve.
ii. Other applications might be on industrial machinery, regulating
opening and closing of equipment for filling bottles or containers,
toys
iii. Before the advent of solid-state electronics, camshaft controllers
were used to control the speed of electric motors.
7. Oscilloscope Apparatus
Same as written in (4).
