1.0 INTRODUCTION

English language has been said it was one of the most crucial language to be
acquired by everyone in today’s era. English language can be beneficial in any field of
career or study. Our Ministry of Education has made a wise decisions in making the
English language as a compulsory passing subject in our education system.

Our curriculum has been set accordingly to the need and suitability of the age
of the pupils. According to Vygotsky, the development of the children are depending
on their age, as well as in acquiring the English language as their second language.
Although it has been said that the pupil has their innate ability to acquire English
language as their second language, Vygotsky believed that the pupil themselves need
to be scaffold in a certain period of time.
The scaffold does not necessary to be in living guidance, but can be as well as
an artificial intelligence system. The technology nowadays has effectively assist our
education system. One of the best way to scaffold the pupil in their teaching and
learning of English language is to use a Virtual Communication System.

The Virtual Communication System is an application that can guide the pupil in
their Listening and Speaking Skill. This application promote a feature which can
respond to human speech knows as speech recognition. The feature of speech
recognition allows the pupil to interact with the application. Furthermore, there are also
the feature of remote control so that the teacher can assess his/her pupil when using
the application during the teaching and learning process in the classroom.

Mostly, our student in the ESL primary classroom encountered the problem to
listen and respond in the teaching and learning session. Most of them are having
difficulties to have a conversation with their peers especially during discussion session.
They do not know how to start a discussion or a conversation as well as respond to a
given stimuli.

The question comes when the word ‘peers’ was stated. The Virtual
Communication System can be considered as a peer because they can interact with
the pupils along the application of the system. By having the remote control, teacher
can always put certain sentence or questions so that the pupil can interact to. The
Virtual Communication System will act as a scaffold to aid and encourage the pupils
to having a real life-like conversation with the AI avatar. The pupil will be given the
chance to have a conversation with their peers after a several practice of using the
application.

1.1 Past Experience

I was having my first practicum in Sekolah Kebangsaan Inanam Dua to


teach English language in a Year 4 class. The class has a total of 38 pupil
which has various range of proficiency level depending on what skill they are
being taught. But, the most explicit problem that I have encountered when I
was teaching the class is that their Listening & Speaking skills are at low
proficiency level.

The problem occurred is that the students cannot speak using simple
English language structure. This happened when I was carrying my teaching
and learning session in the class with the people. However, quite number of
them are good in their writing but not in their speaking area.
2. 0 RESEARCH FOCUS

This research will focusing on how to cater the pupils need in enhancing their ability of listening
and speaking in English language. It will be focusing in the DSKP of Year 4 Primary students
of Listening and Speaking areas which are;

i. 1.2.4 Able to participate in guided conversations with peers


ii. 1.3.2 able to listen to and demonstrate understanding of oral texts by:
i. Asking and answering questions

4.0 research questions

The research questions for this study are:

- How can I teach reading comprehension skills to year 3 pupils in a rural primary school
in inanam sabah
- How is the used of graphic organizer as a technique in encouraging pupils to improve
their reading comprehension skills
- What are the learning points which arise from the action research that may improve
and enrich me professionally?
