Nature for the Future

National parks are dedicated to
conserving a nation's unique fJora
and fauna, and distinct scenic and
wildlife heritage for future gener
ations. These parks are rich in
plant and animal species, thriving
in their indigenous natural
environment and beauty.
Each country has its own
national parks which protect a
number of species. Till 1 970, India
had only five national parks.
However, new laws were passed
in the 1 970s and 1 980s to protect
wildlife and the environment. As
a result, many more national
parks were established.
By 201 2, there were 1 03
national parks in India. This
number will definitely increase,
as plans are afoot to set up a total
of 1 66 national parks. This issue of

What are national parks?
f you have visited a national park, you will know that it is
I a place where Nature has been left undisturbed, and
you can see animals in their natural surroundings. In other
words, it is a park that preserves or conserves Nature for
future generations to study and enjoy. Every country in the
world has its own national parks, and there is an interna
tional organization, the IUCN- International Union for the
Conservation of Nature- that is recognized as a regulatory
body for these parks. According to the IUCN there are more
than 6500 national parks in the world today. The first
national park to be established was the Yel lowstone
National Park in the U SA. It was declared a national park in
, 872. The largest national park in the world is the Northeast

Why is the Dudhwa National Park

i mportant?

udhwa National Park lies in

D Uttar Pradesh. It is tucked
between India and Nepal, in the
region referred to as 'the Terai belt'.
The Terai region is one of the
most endangered ecosystems on
the planet, and so, Dudhwa's
importance lies in conserving this
ecosystem. With its varied topog
raphy, lush green landscape and
remarkable biodiversity, the
reserve is an enviable paradise for
nature lovers.
The park is the last refuge for the
critically endangered sub-species
of the swamp deer, called Baras
ingha. The grasslands are the
natural habitat of Indian
one-horned rhinoceros, which
adds to the importance of this
national park.

Home of Deer
If you visit the Dudhwa National Park, you
can see up to five species of deer. They are
the swamp deer, sambar, the barking deer,
spotted deer and hog deer . In fact, Dudhwa
National Park has the distinction of being the
only place in the world inhabited by five
species of deer! There are only seven species
of deer in the whole of India, so Dudhwa can
rightly be called 'Home of the Deer.'

I Wonder Why is it said that multi-dimensional movies
are different from normal movies?

Question of the or six dimensions.
Month In a 3-D film, viewers are required to wear
special glasses which will show as a three-di

having more than three dimensions provide a
different experience to the viewers. Special
theatres are required to show these films, and
viewers can experience them through other
senses like odour, touch and sight. The seats to
watch such movies are specially designed to
create vibration, wave motion etc. There would
be other effects, too, like smoke, water spraying
