Total Sulfur 0.5-2.2
Volatile Matter 17-37

SECTION 4: FIRST AID MEASURES

Eyes: Flush with water for at least 15 minutes including under eye lids. Consult a physician if
irritation persists.

Special Firefighting Procedures: Firefighters should wear SCBA's with full face protection
when fighting fires involving coal or petroleum products. Use wash down and spread out method.

Unusual Fire & Explosion Hazards: Susceptible to spontaneous combustion. Highly

combustible and explosive in powder form.

SECTION 6: ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

Spills Procedure: Normal product use is not conducive to large spills. Cleanup of the spilled dust
by HEPA vacuum is adequate.

SECTION 7: HANDLING AND STORAGE

Handling & Storage: Store in original container away from light, heat and moisture.

SECTION 8: EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION

Coal dust bituminous
TWA: 10 mg/m3/(%SiO2+2), from OSHA (PEL) [United States] Inhalation Respirable.
TWA: 0.9 mg/m3 from ACGIH (TLV) [United States, 2013] Inhalation Respirable.

Protective Equipment: Safety glasses are recommended. Eye wash fountains should be
available whenever handling dust. Normal ventilation is adequate for the intended purpose of the
product. Respiratory protection is not necessary under normal conditions during calibration of the
CDEM-1000. Neoprene or PVC gloves may be worn to avoid prolonged skin contact.

SECTION 9: PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

Appearance & Odor: Irregular, rectangular Solubility in Water: Insoluble
particles, gray-black to black in color, sized to Flash Point: > 260F
40 to 160 µm, with very slight odor. Auto Ignition Temperature: 260-365°F
Melting Point: 750°F/385°C (First softening) Flammability Limits: N/A
Specific Gravity: 1.43 (H20=1)
Vapor Pressure, mm Hg: N/A
Evaporation Rate: N/A

SECTION 10: STABILITY AND REACTIVITY

Stability: This is a stable material. It will not undergo hazardous polymerization. However, fine
dust can ignite spontaneously, and heated storage can accelerate the process.

Conditions to Avoid: Store in the original container away from sources of heat. Do not store at
high temperatures. Keep away from sources of spark or flame.

Hazardous Decomposition Products: May emit hydrogen, methane, carbon monoxide, oxides
of sulfur and Hydrogen and coal tar pitch volatiles upon thermal decomposition.

SECTION 11: TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Coal dust cannot be classified as to its carcinogenicity to humans. (IARC Monographs, Vol.68
(1997) pp 337-406.)
Acute toxicity, rat, oral or inhalation data not available.
Long term inhalation of coal dust may lead to pneumoconiosis. The ACGIH TLV is based on lung
damage and pulmonary fibrosis. The TLV is intended to minimize the potential for nearly all
miners from developing progressive massive fibrosis (PMF) and chronic obstructive lung disease
during their lifetime. ACGIH TLV Documentation for Coal Dust, 2001.

SECTION 12: ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Not available

SECTION 13: DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS

Disposal Procedure: Dispose according to federal, state and local regulations. Product is
conducive to incineration or approved regulated landfill.
