Tahitian Landscape

Paul Gauguin-tahitian landscape 1891

This picture, one of the first he painted in the South Seas, exhibits the artist's
characteristic post-Impressionist style. In it, Gauguin used sinuous contours and intense
colors to express the joy and serenity inspired by the lush tropical site. He wanted to
capture tahitis culture, and especially the landscape of the luscious green and
mountains. The landscape was so much different than his, he really encorporated that
into this piece of art. Tahitia use to be under the influence europe, but then the
intermarriage and the French policy of assimilation produced polynesian (which was a
mixed culture between China and French). This deeply influenced the culture, so tahiti
took on chinese and French culture. Thus, the official language is French. Religion was
centered on regional, tribal, and kin tutelar deities, but mostly was centered around
christian beliefs.

Street Dresden by Ernest

Kirchner-1908

During the beginning of 1900s, Germany was in a state of rising power.

Especially, in the working class, the number of people increased
dramatically with a huge rise in the trade union membership. This was the
primary source of the industrial growth, and without it, would not have

occurred.Because of this innovation, people began to feel lost in the new

“modern life” and so he sought to express those feelings through painting
people with masks. Kirchner has violently heightened the colors of this
urban scene to depict the emotions. The language during this time was
German. Also, at that time the core belief was roman catholic. The core
Christian belief is that, through the death and resurrection of Jesus, sinful
humans can be reconciled to God and thereby are offered salvation and
the promise of eternal life. Roman Catholics believe in the resurrection of
Jesus.

Overview
Our art exhibit will contain works of art ranging from 1865-2000. Over this time art has
changed, yet remained very similar in some ways. It starts of impressionism which is a style
or movement in painting characterized by a concern with depicting the visual
impression of the moment, especially in terms of the shifting effect of light and color. It
then moves to symbolism during the 1870s which uses objects to portray ideas. In 1880 post
impressionism started artist ( van Gogh and Gauguin) against the impressionists to explore
color, line, and form, and the emotional response of the artist, a concern that led to the
development which lead to expressionism. Next, during the 1900 Fauvism hit which is a
style of painting with vivid expressionistic and non naturalistic use of color. Later on in
1940s it moved into abstract expressionism which is aimed at subjective emotional
expression with particular emphasis on the creative spontaneous act. 1950s and 1960s
was a time of pop culture and superrealism. That takes us up to the 20th century of
Performance art which is characterised by the increase in personal computers and art
was used liberally in new video games, movies, and other technological advances. Art
was being used for performances sake and to catch the eye and appeal of the buyer.
Art was largely commercial in this last decade before the dawn of the twenty first
century. Our exhibit will walk you through the stages of art throughout time, causing you
to become indulged in the artistic world making it appear to be a reality. It will be an
experience that cannot be found anywhere else.
