Equilibrium of a rigid body

RECALL: ... Effect of Forces on Motion:

Particle Rigid Body

F2 F3 F2 F3

F1

If F  0 ... Translation If M  0 ... Rotation

Conditions for Rigid-Body Equilibrium

F  0

Mo  0

Where:
 Forces are “external forces”
(body force, reaction force, applied force)
 Moment may be taken about any center of rotation “o”

Free body diagrams (FBD)

Remember ... Purpose of FBD:

Space Diagram  Free Body Diagram

- Physical connections - Applied forces

- Applied forces - Reaction forces
- Body - Body forces (i.e. Weight)
- Geometry - Known and unknown forces

Free Body Diagram Construction - “Recipe”

1. Make a sketch of problem showing the geometry and connections (SPACE DIAGRAM).

2. Make a CLEAR DECISION on which body to isolate.

3. Draw this body separate from all other bodies.

Represent on this FREE BODY all forces exerted ON IT by OTHER BODIES.
- Known Force - line segment with arrow
- Unknown Force - line segment (assume arrow)

** “MAGIC SCISSORS” ***

Construct “best” set of coordinate axes for solution.

 check what movement is restricted.

Equations of equilibrium (2 - D Systems)

Fx  0

Fy  0

Mo  0

3-Equations.... solve for 3 Unknowns

Alternative sets of Equations

Fa  0
MB  0
MC  0

Points B and C cannot be on a line  to line a

MA  0
MB  0
MC  0

 A, B, and C cannot lie on the same line

Recall ... Procedure for Analysis

Given: Sketch problem with given data

(SPACE DIAGRAM)

Required: State the question ..........look for # of ?

Solution:
 DRAW AN FBD
 Establish a coordinate axis - direction and rotation
 Determine x and y components of forces

ENGINEERING MECHANICS CME 1302

 State the Physics (Equilibrium):

i) F = 0 (or Fx = 0, Fy = 0, Fz = 0)
ii) Mo = 0
- choice of “o” - where you know least
 Substitute into physics - “play your trump card”
 Solve Algebra - note significance of “negative sign”
 CHECK: unit consistency?
Reasonable?
Another approach?

Example - 2-D Rigid Body Equilibrium

Determine the magnitude of the reactions on the beam at A and B. Neglect the thickness of the
beam.

EXERCISE:
