Classroom Observation Assignment

Observation Date: 04/11/2019 Observation Time: 9:30am to 10:30am

Teacher Observed: Ms. Muraiysa Subject/Grade Level: Pre- Kindergarten

1-What was/were the learning objectives/outcomes of the lesson? (Add state objectives if
known, for example, TEKS §111.4. Grade 2.b.)

State Objective: According to “PREK GUIDELINES ALIGNMENT” VI.B.1. Child observes,


investigates, describes and discusses the characteristics of organisms.

Learning Objective: The student will identify parts of an animal.

2-How did the teacher begin and end the lesson?

Ms. Muraiysa started lesson, with the whole group, by showing them animal picture cards with
the name of an animal. At the end of the lesson teacher shows the work sheet, she modeled that
how they can fill it out.

3-What did the teacher use for teaching materials or instructional aids/equipment?

Teacher used a book about animals, sample work sheet drawn on chart paper for modeling and
explaining the activity, animal picture cards and toy animals.

4-Which instructional methods and strategies did the teacher use? (lecture, inquiry,
discovery learning, discussions, games or simulations, demonstrations, cooperative learning,
integration of technology, socrative questioning, etc)

Ms Muraiysa used demonstration, discovery learning, and cooperative learning.


5-How did the teacher assess learning? (informal, formal, formative, summative, oral, open-
ended, quiz, feedback etc) See Chapter 8 for more information on assessment methods

Teacher asked open ended question to some students and collect the work sheets at the end, to
assess children’s progress, It’s a kind of summative assessment.

6- What can you say about the teacher’s philosophy/beliefs and style?
(Traditional/progressive, behaviorist, student-centered vs. teacher centered, authoritative etc)

I can say that teacher’s style based on teacher centered, because at this stage of learning children
needs to have on hand experiences, they are developing their skills, so they need support of a
teacher to learn new things in their own pace.

7-How does the teacher manage classroom? Can you identify classroom management
techniques used?

Ms. Muraiysa is good in classroom management, class is organized, the classroom’s rule chart
was hanged on the wall on children’s eye level. I noticed that she was appreciated children who
were sitting in circle time and pay attention to lesson, during the lesson she asked questions to
get them involved and engaged.

8-Observe in the classroom setting and determine types of behavior students play when off-
task. What do they do when they are not paying attention? How does the teacher re-direct
them or get them back on task?

When some students were off-task during the circle time, when teacher was demonstrating the
activity, they talked each other and touching the things in the shelves, then she call their names
and point out the classroom rules chart that shows “we listen” and show them chart of “ready to
learn position”. But in her class two children didn’t pay attention and they sat on chair and did
something else. She tried to engage them, but they didn’t follow the directions, she gave them
animal toys on the table.

9-How does the teacher communicate with students (verbal, vocal, meta-verbal or non-verbal
communication such as facial, body language, use of space, motion and time?)

Most of the time she communicates verbally, sometime uses facial expression and body
language.
10-Who were the students in the class? What did you notice about them? (Background,
diversity, attitude, motivation, interaction, participation, etc)

I saw diversity in that classroom, some of them have Hispanic background, some are special
need students, and rest of the other are regular English language students. Most of them
cooperate each other but some doesn’t want to share anything with others and sit individually,
special need student wants one on one attention.

11-What did you see that is effective in engaging students? What do you see that is
ineffective in keeping students engaged?

Teacher communicate with the students during circle time and activity time, it’s the most
effective strategy I have seen for engaging students. The activity work sheet is not appropriate
for all children because some of them need help to write the letters, so those students lose their
attention and they were no more engaged in that activity.

12-What are the two instructional strategies you observed and would like to apply in your
classroom?

Teacher connecting the students to their previous knowledge, that’s really helps them to
understand and learn new things. I like the way to engaged children in her circle time by
appreciating those who are more attentive and pay attention and ask open ended questions that
helps them in their critical thinking.

13-What are two important classroom management strategies that you observed and would
like to apply in your classroom?

The first important classroom strategy that I would like to apply in my classroom is the print
knowledge, that is not only in English language but in Spanish too, that’s helping the students to
understand who speaks Spanish. Another one is that during the children activity time walk
around the class and communicate them and help them if they need.
