Hevacomp for Windows Installation Notes

Please read the following information before installing Hevacomp Windows software
Dear Hevacomp user
Welcome to the latest version of Hevacomp Mechanical and Electrical design software
developed for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT 4 (sp 3), Windows 2000
and Windows XP.
It is important that you read and understand the notes below and those contained in
the installation letter to ensure the correct installation of Hevacomp software.
Installation
Hevacomp have re-engineered the installation of our software to use the new
Microsoft Installation Engine. For the most part, these changes will be
transparent to you, the user, but there are a couple of new features you should be
aware of.
i. During installation, the Install Engine will check that your machine has a
compatible version of itself already installed. If not, your existing Install
Engine will be upgraded to ensure compatibility. If no previous Install Engine is
found then the version included with this installation set will be installed onto
your system.
In some circumstances, this will necessitate a reboot of the machine. If this is
the case, then Setup should be restarted after the reboot has taken place.
ii. Hevacomp Software has many new features that rely on the existence of other
third party software to run correctly. Normally this software is installed on your
system silently and with no bother to yourself. However, the latest software relies
on Windows Internet Explorer to be installed. If you have a version earlier than
version 5.0 then the Install Engine will automatically install an updated version
onto your machine. As this is a complicated process, it may be necessary to reboot
your machine after Internet Explorer has installed. If this is the case, then
simply re-run Setup after your machine has rebooted.
iii. Shared files. During the installation process, the Install Engine will attempt
to put certain program extension files on your system and register them for use in
the System Registry. These program extensions can sometimes be locked out because
they are already in use by another application. In rare occasions, you will be
warned of this case and given the option to shut down the application that is
locking these files. If you wish, you can either shut down the relevant
application or choose to ignore it. Either option is fine. After the installation
is complete, the Install Engine will reboot your machine to make sure any changes
to your system are carried out correctly.
iv. Windows NT, 2000 and XP users. All of these platforms are based on Windows NT
technology, which limits the ways that application software can be installed. If
you are using either of these operating systems/platforms, you must be logged on as
the system administrator to install the software. If you are not, you will be
warned and the installation will not continue.
v. Dongles. To run the Hevacomp CAD software, extra software needs to be installed
for the program to talk to the hardware protection device (dongle). For a single
user dongle, this software is installed as a matter of course alongside the CAD
software. If you have purchased a Network Dongle, you must install the extra dongle
control software onto the workstation that will host the Network Dongle. This
software can be installed from the main Setup menu by clicking on Utilities and
selecting NetHasp installation from the screen that follows.
Version 18 of our design software must be installed to a directory other than the
one previously used by Version 17 if you wish to use both versions simultaneously.
Failure to do so will result in any Version 17 programs that are not replaced with
Version 18 equivalents, ceasing to work. If you accept the default options given
during the Installation process you will avoid any potential problems.
If you have Windows Autoplay feature enabled the Setup will run automatically once
the CD is inserted. If your CD does not Autoplay, from the Taskbar select Start\Run
and type <CDdrive>:SETUP.EXE, and press Enter.
Uninstall
If at a later stage, you wish to remove the Hevacomp Windows software from your
computer, facilities have been included to uninstall the relevant packages. Click
on the Add\Remove software icon in the control panel and select the package to be
removed from the list displayed or re-run the Setup program again.
Network Installation
To install on a networked system we would suggest the following general guidelines.
I. Install the software as standard on the main server. If this is an NT server

you will need to log on as ADMINISTRATOR. It is not sufficient to just have full
administrative rights.
II. Load the software onto each workstation using the Hevacomp standard defaults.
You can then delete the [Program Files\HEVA17] directory from each workstation.
This will ensure that all the necessary system files are copied and registered on
the workstation.
III. Edit the icon properties on each workstation to point to the equivalent
program on the main server.
IV. Create the file PATHS.INI (see section Common data and scratch directories
overleaf) in each of the application directories on the main server to direct the
temporary files to each local workstation. If desired you can re-direct the
HEVADATA directory elsewhere if the users wish to modify these files independently.
This will require you to place a copy of the HEVADATA files at the new location.
Technical Support
Should you encounter problems during installation, please contact our technical
support hotline on (0114) 255 6680 between 9.00am and 5.30pm, Monday to Friday,
ensuring that you have a full description of the problem encountered.
It is also helpful if you are at your computer with the Hevacomp CD-ROM handy if
you have to phone the support desk.
You may be asked for information about certain system files by the technical
support staff. A useful utility - Versions.Exe - can be found on the CD under the
Utilities\Viewer folder.
Setting the default project directory

All Hevacomp Windows software uses the working directory property of the program
icon to set the default project directory. This can be changed by right clicking
the program icon and selecting 'properties'.
The default project directories are:

[Program Files\HEVA18]\ENERGY32 - 32-bit Connect 16th Edition
[Program Files\HEVA18]\MCON32 - 32-bit Mechanical contractor
[Program Files\HEVA18]\MDES32 - 32-bit Mechanical designer
[Program Files\HEVA18]\NIMBUS32 - 32-bit Nimbus Lighting Design
Note: The [Program Files\HEVA18] part of the path reflects the chosen installation
location and may differ on your computer. [Program Files\HEVA18] is the path you
install to if you accept the Installation defaults.
Common data and scratch directories

Each Hevacomp Windows package shares a common data and temporary directory.
Normally these directories are [Program Files\HEVA18]\HEVADATA and [Program
Files\HEVA18]\HSCRATCH. On certain configurations, however, the location of these
directories can be changed, for example when you are using a network. In order to
make the software look elsewhere for these directories, a file called PATHS.INI has
to be created by using a text editor such as NOTEPAD. The first two lines must
contain the full path to the common data directory and the full path to the
temporary directory. The third line is optional and is only used in Design DataBase
to indicate the location of DDBPROJ.LST which in turn points to the last accessed
project. If you are running the software over a network you should set the
temporary directory to a local drive rather than the network drive to avoid
interference from one user to another.

Please note, the final backslash is important and must not be omitted. The
PATHS.INI file once created must be copied to each package directory and the
contents of the HEVADATA directory moved accordingly. The following directories
will need updating accordingly.
