TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION OF PUMPS

1.0 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS


a) Pump and Driving Motor set along with accessories shall be supplied as per technical
specification / Data Sheet given in this specification.
b) This specification together with the pump and motor data sheets and attachments defines the
minimum requirements Pump, Driver (electric motor), accessories and spares.
c) Each Pump shall be fully assembled and coupled with motor on base plate/bed plate. Flexible
Coupling and coupling guard shall also be provided. Required Number of anchor bolts, Nuts &
lock nuts for pumps base plate shall also be provided for all the pumps.
d) Centrifugal Pump shall have stable performance characteristics requiring that at the rated speed
over the whole flow range it shall have a continuously rising curve i.e. the developed head shall
continuously increase with decreasing flow up to shut off head. There shall be no inflection point
at any partial load in the Head-Capacity curve.
e) Pump-Motor assembly shall be capable of starting with full valve open condition.
f) The motors shall be complete in all respects and shall be as per specification attached. The
motor selected shall be to suit the pump’s operation requirement as per data sheets. The motor
input KW shall be at 125% of the designed capacity (rated) or to suit the requirement of
pump at the design point with 15% margin whichever is higher.
g) Impeller diameter of Centrifugal Pump corresponding to the operating condition shall not exceed
95% of the maximum possible diameter of the impeller at speed specified on the bidder’s
performance curve for the type of pump offered. Impellers with minimum impeller diameter for the
casing model shall not be used.
h) First critical speed of rotating assembly shall be at least 30% more than the operating speed. The
preferable operating speed should be 1400 RPM.
i) Pumping unit and auxiliary equipment shall be designed and constructed for safe operation at full
load duty and continuous service. The pumps shall be of robust construction, suitable for long
periods of maintenance-free service. Units shall be of a design proven in similar service with
excellent track record.
j) All electrical and mechanical equipment shall be designed and manufactured so that no damage
results from inland transportation and during storage, installation and operation of equipment
under the climatic conditions to which it will be subjected.
k) Pump and Motor assembly shall be designed to permit ease of access during inspection,
maintenance and repair.
l) Clamps, lifting lugs and eyebolts of adequate capacity shall be provided to ensure safe and easy
handling of the pumps and motors.
m) Unit shall be provided with proper doweling between pump and motor for ease of assembly.
n) Pump shall be completely assembled at manufacturer's shop and mating parts shall be match-
marked for ease of assembly at site. This is applicable for spare rotating assembly also, if any.
o) No deviations or exceptions from this specification shall be permitted without written approval of
purchaser. Intended deviations shall be separately listed with supporting reasons, for
consideration by the Purchaser.
p) Compliance with this specification shall not relieve the supplier of the responsibility of furnishing
equipment and accessories of proper design, materials and workmanship to meet the specified
operating conditions.
q) Static Seal Elements for the wetted part shall be of Teflon.
r) Quality Assurance Plan for the pumps shall be prepared by the contractor and shall be got
approved by the Client.

2.0 STANDARDS AND APPLCABLE CODES:


The design, manufacture, assembly and testing of the pumps covered by the specification shall
unless specifically stated otherwise conform to the latest editions of all standards and codes
(along with addenda) mentioned below. In case of conflict between two different classes of
specifications the requirements of the more stringent the two shall govern.
a. BIS 5120 Technical requirements for process pumps.
b. ISO 5199-2002 Technical specifications for Centrifugal pumps.
c. ISO 2858 Design specification for Back pull out pumps.
d. ISO 1940 Mechanical vibration -- Balance quality requirements for rotors.

3.0 DESIGN REQUIREMENTS:


3.1 GENERAL:
1. All the Centrifugal pumps shall be of single stage, horizontal, radial split, volute casing in rugged
construction, back pull out design, end suction, top discharge conforming to BIS: 5120. All the
centrifugal pumps shall be designed to operate continuously at a maximum efficiency under
specified conditions consistent with good operating characteristics and high efficiency. The
pumps shall have continuously rising head characteristics from the design point to shut-off. All
the pumps shall preferably be of non-overloading type.
2. The pump shall be designed to permit maximum interchangeability of parts for shaft assembly
including bearings, sleeves and sealing components. All casting and forging shall be conform to
their respective materials specification and shall be free from flaws and objectionable
imperfections, machined true and in good workmanship like manner
3. All accessories as called for in Data Sheet and any other accessory required for proper and safe
operation shall be furnished with the pumps.
4. All incidental piping (including-valves) required for venting, sealing, lubrication and cooling for
mechanical seal and/or bearing of pump shall be furnished by the vendor.
3.2 CASING:
1. The casing shall be so proportioned that the velocity of liquid be reduced gradually and converted
to pressure with minimum friction and wear. The surface finish should be smooth. The pump shall
be so designed that the differential pressure across the sealing surface and mechanical seal is
minimum. The design pressure of the pump shall not be less than the suction pressure plus shut
off head of the pump. It should be rigid and properly supported to resist misalignment and
distortion from pipe loads.
2. Replaceable type wear rings shall be provided. The rings shall be so fitted as to prevent turning.
3. The pumps suction and discharge nozzles shall be with flanges drilled as per ANSI 150 Lbs
class.
4. The casing for SS pumps shall have proper venting and draining provision with valves. The
casing joints shall be provided with dowels for accurate re-assembly after opening.
3.3 IMPELLER:
1. The impeller shall be radial and floating/hydraulically balanced with provision of back vanes and
holes to relieve pressure on mechanical seal. All waterways shall be smooth finished.
2. The impeller selected shall be at least 5% smaller in diameter than the maximum size that can be
accommodated in the selected size of casing and shall have high efficiency and low NPSH
requirement.
3. Rotor assembly including impeller, shaft etc. shall be statically and dynamically balanced as per
the pump data sheet. Wherever such requirement is not specified by the pump data sheet then,
as a minimum requirement, the dynamic balancing shall be carried out as per ISO 1940 Gr 6.3.
4. The impeller shall be keyed to the shaft and proper lock nut provision shall be made to prevent
loosening of impeller in case of reverse rotation etc.
3.4 SHAFT, SHAFT SLEEVES & WEARING RINGS:
1. The shaft shall be preferably be machined from bar / forging and ground finished. It should be
adequately sized so that maximum deflection of shaft at mechanical seal face under worst
condition of loading shall not exceed 0.05mm. The surface finish in critical areas of mechanical
seal shall be better than 0.8micron.
2. Shaft sleeves and wearing rings shall be replaceable and with high surface hardness materials.
Shaft sleeves shall be positively driven, clamped and sealed at impeller end but it should be free
to expand at other end. The surface finish shall be better than 1micro inch. The wearing ring shall
be properly secured to prevent turning.
3.5 COUPLING
The pump shall be directly coupled to motor through suitable flexible/spacer type coupling to take
care of usual shaft misalignments, shaft expansion and ease of dismantling during maintenance
of pumps. Couplings should be properly guarded. The coupling shall be preferably spacer
coupling with sufficient spacer length, so that the coupling, bearings, seal and rotor as applicable,
can be replaced without disturbing the driver or the suction and discharge piping. The couplings
shall be statically and dynamically balanced.
3.6 MECHANICAL SEALS (Minimum Requirement):
All SS Pumps shall be fitted with mechanical seal with minimum following requirements.
1 The mechanical seals shall be single, internal, unbalanced cartridge seals types with dry running
capability. The Make/Brand of Mechanical Seal shall be indicated while quoting.
2 The mating surfaces shall be Solid Silicon carbide – Solid Silicon carbide. The surface shall be
hard with surface flatness better than 1micro inch.
3 If required, a flushing line shall be furnished by the vendor, complete with strainer and orifice,
from the pump discharge to the sealing face. When the pumping liquid is not suitable for this
purpose, a flushing connection shall be provided so that it can be connected to an external
source
3.7 BEARINGS
a) Anti-friction bearings shall be standard type and shall be selected for minimum L-10 rating. The
bearings should be selected to give 3 years (25,000 hrs) life with continuous operation at rated
operating conditions but not less than 16,000 hrs at maximum axial and radial loads at rated
speed.
b) The rise in bearing grease / oil temperature with continuous running of the pump shall be within
the allowable limit which shall not exceed 20° C for grease and 30°C for oil lubricated bearing
above ambient. Cooling arrangements shall be provided, if required. Bearings shall be equipped
with constant level sight feed oilers.
c) Lubrication and Cooling:
i. Pump shall be suitable for dry start under normal condition.
ii. All instruments required for lubrication system and cooling system shall be provided by supplier.
d) Bearing in the pump shall be arranged so as to permit measurement of shaft vibration adjacent to
at least one bearing.
3.8 BASE PLATE
a) The common base plate for pump and motor shall be in one piece. Suitable holes shall
be provided for grouting and these shall be so located that the base can be grouted in
place without disturbing the pump and motor. All pumps and motors shall be properly,
aligned, bolted and dowelled to the base plates by the vendor.
b) Adequate space shall be provided between pump drain connections base plate for
installation of minimum 15 mm drain piping. Pumps shall be supplied with suitable
drain pans or drain rim type base plates with valves drain connections

3.9 MATERIAL OF CONSTRUCTION: (common for all types of pump)


a) The material of construction of parts shall be as per the data sheets. Pump base plate and
foundation bolt shall be as per the data sheets.
b) Only the best quality and type of material shall be used. Castings used for any part shall be
sound, free from shrink or blow-holes, scale, blisters etc. Similarly forgings shall be free from flaw
and objectionable imperfections, machined true and in a workman like manner.
c) Welding of fabricated part shall be done only by qualified welders.

3.10 SPARE PARTS :
For each type of pumps and drives, the following spare parts shall be supplied along with the
pumps. The supplier may also recommend spare parts other than listed below if necessary.
Purchaser reserves option to alter the quantities hence unit price shall be indicated against each
item.

4.0 TESTS & INSPECTION:


A comprehensive Quality Assurance Plan (QAP) shall be submitted by the vendor along with
the quotation, in the absence of which the offer is likely to be rejected.

4.1 Hydrostatic test :


Standard hydrostatic test shall be conducted on the pump casing with water at 1.5 times the
maximum discharge head or twice the rated discharge head, whichever is higher. While
arriving at the above pressure, the maximum suction head specified in Data Sheet shall be
taken into account.
Unless otherwise stated in Data Sheet; the hydrostatic tests on the casing shall be
conducted for a minimum duration of 30 minutes.
4.2 Performance tests:
Standard running test:
The pumps shall be tested as per IS: 5120, at rated speed in manufacturer’s works to
measure capacity, total head, efficiency and power. The negative tolerance on efficiency
shall be limited to 2 ½ % (not 5% as indicated in IS: 5120). These tests will form the basis for
acceptance of pumps except for vibration and noise. The pumps shall be tested over the
range covering from shut off head to the maximum flow. The duration of the test shall be
minimum one hour or till the stabilization of bearing/mechanical seal temperature rise.
Minimum five readings approximately equidistant shall be taken for plotting the performance
curves.

The positive tolerance on power input to the pump set at duty point shall be limited to the
value, if indicated in Data Sheet. Otherwise the tolerance is governed by the tolerances on
pump capacity and efficiency of the pump set.

NPSH tests:
NPSH tests shall be conducted with water as the medium to demonstrate the ability of the
pump to draw the water the designed suction lift.

4.3 Mechanical Balancing:


In addition to static balancing, impeller and balancing drum shall be balanced dynamically as
per ISO-1940 Gr. 6.3 near to the operating speed.
4.4 Non-destructive testing:
Non-destructive testing of the pump components shall be offered as specified in Data Sheet.
These tests shall be conducted in accordance with relevant standards. Prior to testing, the
test procedure and repair procedure shall be submitted for the purchaser’s approval. All
components which are tested successfully shall be used for the manufacture of final product.
All test results shall be submitted by the vendor for the purchaser’s approval.
4.5 Visual Inspection:
Pumps shall be offered for visual inspection (if specified in Data Sheet) by the purchaser
before shipment. The components of the pumps shall not be painted before inspection.
4.6 Material test certificate:
Materials of the various pump components shall be tested in accordance with the relevant
standards. Test certificates for these shall be furnished when specified in Data Sheet and
shall be duly correlated w.r.t components/parts.
4.7 Field testing:
After installation, the pumps will be subjected to testing at field by the purchaser. If the field
performance is found not to meet the requirements regarding vibration and noise as
specified, then the equipment shall be rectified or replaced by the vendor, at no extra cost to
the purchaser.
4.8 Other tests:

5.0 PREPARATION FOR SHIPMENT
a) All flanges, nozzles and any other openings shall be blanked-off (capped or blind flanged). All
untapped openings shall be provided with substantial wood or metal closure. The ends of small
piping may be sealed with tape.
b) The Pump shall be supplied with a Nameplate as per relevant standard containing all the
information required by the code. However following information must be incorporated in the
Nameplate even if it is not required by the code:
i. Purchaser's Item No. (Tag no.)
ii. Manufacturer's Name
iii. Type and Serial No.
iv. Speed
v. Kilowatt Rating
vi. Capacity
vii. Head
viii. Weight of equipment
c) The nameplate shall be of stainless steel and relevant information shall be punched into the
same.
d) All auxiliaries, dismantled and packed separately, shall be properly marked with the Item No., for
which it is intended, by means of metal tag.
e) Pump with auxiliaries, shall be suitably packed, fastened to avoid damage during transit and
crated for shipment and storage for a period of 6 months. Lifting, unpacking and handling
instructions shall be securely attached to the exterior of the largest packing in a well-marked,
weather proof container. The up-right position of lifting points, gross weights and dimensions
shall be clearly marked on each package. Each Package shall clearly identify the equipment
contained therein.

6.0 PERFORMANCE GUARANTEE


The equipment and its accessories shall be guaranteed for a period of 12 months from the
date of commissioning of the equipment or 18 months after delivery at site, whichever is
earlier.
The vendor shall also guarantee that the equipment will operate satisfactorily and the
performance and the efficiencies of the equipment when operating under normal conditions
shall not be less than the guaranteed values. The vendor shall further guarantee that during
the guarantee period they will replace all defective materials, accessories etc. furnished or
installed under the contract, free of cost to the purchaser. The guarantee for the replaced
repaired work shall be 12 months from the date of such replacement repair.

7.0 DRAWINGS, INSTRUCTIONS & MAINTENANCE MANUAL, TEST REPORTS ETC. AFTER
AWARD OF CONTRACT.
7.1 Contractor before commencing with shop fabrication and within 30 days from receipt of order
shall prepare and submit to purchaser for approval four (4) sets of his quality assurance
plans giving detail time schedule preferably in the time PERT/CPM net work covering various
phases e.g. Preparation of shop drawing, procurement of material, manufactures, assembly,
inspection testing, delivery to site etc.
7.2 Within three (3) weeks from the date of receipt of order the contractor shall submit four (4)
copies of list of drawings he proposes to submit for approval before commencing with shop
manufacture. These drawings shall include general arrangement drawings of pump coupled
to motor giving dimensions, nozzle details etc., Cross sectional assembly drawing of pumps
giving fabrication details, component details and bill of materials with material of construction
etc., foundation drawings giving loading data and grouting details, etc. motor dimensional
drawings showing the terminal boxes and method of purchaser cable termination etc. these
drawings when approved in writing by the purchaser. Any prior approval work done without
purchaser’s approval shall be at a contractor’s risk.
7.3 After drawings are approved contractor shall furnish one (1) reproducible and five (5)
additional complete sets of finial drawings including all subsequent revisions approved by the
purchaser. The reproducible shall be of good quality capable of producing clear legible prints.
7.4 After drawings of contract vendor shall submit copies of design calculation including
hydraulic design and pressure part calculations. The vendor shall satisfy the purchaser as to
validity of his design to specification requirements.
7.5 After the award of contract vendor shall submit five (5) copies of all relevant material tests
reports, manufacture’s test certificates, hydrostatic test certificates, performance test
certificates etc. as asked in the specification for inspections and testing.
7.6 Performance curves (capacity vs total head, efficiency, NPSH and KW requirement ) ranging
from zero to max capacity.
Vendor shall submit five (5) numbers of bound copies of instructional manuals for each type of
pump for installation operation and maintenance of the equipment furnished by him. The manuals
should include drawings and performance curves, assembly and disassembly procedure, parts
replacement, etc. the manual shall be got approved by the purchaser before full ply is made.

8.0 PAINTING:
All ferrous surfaces shall be painted with two coats of red oxide primer paint followed by
finish paint.

9 .0 DELIVERY SCHEDULE:
All Items shall be delivered to FRFCF Stores, FRFCF site ,IGCAR, Kalpakkam, Tamilnadu –
603 102 within Twelve (12) months from the date of issue of purchase order.

Notes Common for all the pumps:

1) Efficiency of the pump shall be indicated.


2) Shaft power / Brake power for pumps shall be indicated.
3) Motor to be suitable for open discharge/ end of the characteristics curve
operation or 25% higher than the maximum rated point, whichever is higher.
4) Motor rating to be indicated by supplier. 25% margin over BKW shall be provided.
5) NPSH (Required) shall be indicated.
6) Difference between NPSH (Available) and NPSH (Required) shall be minimum 1
MLC.
7) Operating point shall be left of B E P.
8) Corrosion allowance of 3.0 mm for CS and 2.0mm for SS shall be provided.
9) Mechanical design pressure shall be 10 kg/cm2 (g).
10) Nozzle and flange rating shall be 150# minimum.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION & DATA SHEETS OF MOTOR FOR PUMP

MOTORS:
1. TYPE: The motors shall be squirrel cage induction type and rated for continuous duty. All the
motors shall be suitable for Direct On Line (DOL) starting. All motors up to frame size 315 shall
be energy efficient (Efficiency-1) conforming to latest IS 12615 . Motors to be controlled by VFD
(as per load list) shall be suitable for starting/running with VFD. Suitable DOL starters shall also
be supplied along with the motor.
2. Motors shall be suitable for operation on power supply voltage 415 +/-10% V and frequency
50+/-3% Hz.
3. INSULATION: The motors shall have class “F” insulation but the temperature rise in the motor
shall be restricted to permissible limit for class “B” insulation. Windings insulation shall be given
anti corrosive treatment.
4. AMBIENT TEMPERATURE: Ambient temperature of 50 deg. Centigrade shall be considered.
5. TERMINAL BOX: IP-55 as per IS:2147.All the motors shall have terminal box of adequate size
and strength to withstand short circuit fault current and also accommodate the cable termination
comfortably without causing undue stress on the motor terminals.
6. ENCLOSURE: Motors shall have TEFC enclosures with IP55 protection, suitable for outdoor
installation.
7. GREASING ARRANGEMENT: All the motors above 3.7 KW / 5 HP shall be provided with
greasing nipple for on line greasing arrangement.
8. MOTOR RATING: Motor rating for centrifugal pumps and compressor shall be selected as per
recommendation of relevant API codes, over ridden by these specifications. The motors for VVFD
shall be designed suitably for the drives.
9. Motors shall be capable to start pump at 80% of rated voltage with control valve wide open.
10. The supplier shall perform all Acceptance and Routine Tests for all motors and Type test on one
motor of each rating as per latest version of IS – 325 & IS – 4029 in the presence of purchaser’s
representative.
11. PAINTING: Motor shall be painted as per applicable IS-5, shade -631.
12. SPACE HEATER: To be provided
