REVIEWER IN PASTORAL COUNSELING

Pastoral context- it can’t be avoided as pastors, referrals’

Pastoral care- generally, relationship with people, ministry to people’s needs

Pastoral counseling- part of pastoral care, assistance of person’s in distress/ psycho-emotional problems
in relating w/ self, others and God

Pastoral psychotherapy- in depth-assistance to people in dealing with inner conflicts

*referrals to psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatrist

Spiritual direction- not on functionality but on the movement of the spirit

*Abraham Maslow’s growth needs

COUNSELING APPROACHES AND TECHNIQUES:

1. PSYCHO-SPIRITUAL APPROACH (Dr. Peck/ Fr. Ruben Tanseco, SJ)


- Basis of ministry in general, also in family ministry

Stages of Spiritual Growth

Stage I- Chaotic, antisocial- frequently pretenders, unprincipled

Stage II- Formal,institutional, fundamental- submitting to the law but they do not understand the spirit
of the law

Stage III- Skeptic, individual- evidence-based, frequently non-believers, but generally more spiritually
developed, though individualistic, not the least bit antisocial

Stage IV- mystic, communal- speaks about unity and connectedness, out of love and commitment to the
whole
Definitions and examples of Various Religious & Spiritual Interventions

*Therapist prayer, teaching spiritual concepts, reference to scripture, spiritual self-disclosure, spiritual
confrontation, spiritual assessment, religious relaxation or imagery, therapist and client prayer, blessing
by therapist (priest), encouraging forgiveness, use religious community, client prayer, etc.

2. PERSON-CENTERED COUNSELING (Carl Rogers)

-person-centereed approach/non-directive counseling

Principle:

- Man is caopable of becoming a person


- Counselor as midwife (facilitator of growth)
- Quality of relationship counts most

Attitudes needed:

1. Empathy- feeling what the other person is feeling, non-judgmental


2. Congruence- aware of what is happening within himself, transparent, true to what he says
3. Unconditional Positive Regard- looks at the person as worthy and with potentials

STAGES IN HELPING:

C- I- A

1. Catharsis- building rapport, ventilation and catharsis (talking things out)


2. Insight’- development of insight/objectivity, reonrientation and redirection
3. Action- implementation

PSYCHO-SPIRITUAL COUNSELING

Base: The Humanistic Model, with openness to integrate techniques/strategies from other models
(integrative approach)

Value-orietned/Relationship oriented

Empathy is the essence of approach

Stages:

C- I – A

Catharsis- language of the heart, individual session’s with each spouse

- Conjoint session with the couple


- Mutual empathy between husband and wife facilitated by counselor

Insight- deeper clarification of the content

Value-clarification

Feeling + content = meaning

(Language of the mind)

Action- toward decision making, conflict resolution

SYSTEMS THEORY-

Systems- set of interacting units with relationships among them

Basic components: parts- (individual members), connection between the parts (relationships), setting

FAMILY MAPPING – more likely an extension to that of genogram, symbols shows clearer relationships
of the family, with the goal to cut the conflict now.

FAMILY/SYSTEM SCULPTURE- doing a sculp of one’s family looking at structural issues in the family
leading to insights and interventions.

Unsually one member of the family, will be the sculptor.

Sculpting shows familystructures, relationships, and the possible intervention towards the end.

Family floor plan- purpose of family assessemnet and intervention, patterns of family interaction and
structure by analyzing the fnaily of origin or the present family, information can be obtained to
understand such dynamics as family rules, roles and myths.

TRANSFERENCE – TRNASFER OF EXPRESSED FEELINGS FELT BY THE CLIENT TOWARDS THE COUNSELOR

COUNTER-RTRANSFERENCE – transfer of the feleings from the counselor to the client
