Why did so many Colonists die?

Only 60 of the original 214 settlers at jamestown survived, but why? Surprisingly

the new settlers main focus was not on survival but they were determined to make a

successful colony settlement and to spread their knowledge and make it in the “New

World”. Not only were these people unprepared for the new land but they were entering

but were unaware that over 15,000 powhatan indians were already living along the

jamestown river. In all the settlers died because they lacked the survival skills needed,

they had poor relations with the native americans and also because of unforeseen

environmental issues.

The first reason why the jamestown settlers died was most of these settlers were

wealthy english gentlemen and had no prior work or labour experience. Not many of the

people brought to the new settlement had the knowledge to build a successful colony.

Not only did these people not know how to do manual labour but these people were in a

whole new land, so for that reason it made it much harder to build. Also, many of the

settlers that came had unknown occupations, so these men were probably not helping

to the cause, building wise. The settlers didn’t even bring women to reproduce with, this

means that the settlers had to use native american women.

Another reason why many of the settlers did not survive was poor relations with

native americans. The 15,000 powhatan indians that were already been living there,
and knew how to navigate , hunt in the area and overall survive, poor relations with

these people did not advance these settlements.Because the englishmen did not come

with any women to the new settlement that often had to use native american women or

even force them to be their partner. The settlers treated the native americans as if they

were superior to them when actually, this may have set them back because after that

the native americans didn't want to provide assistance in helping the colonists survive.

People have said that if the relationship was better, the native americans could have

potentially helped the colonists arrive.

Lastly, the environment played a very large role in killing so many settlers.

According to Document B from 1606-1612 Jamestown,Virginia had its longest drought,

at one point these people barely had enough water to drink and obviously did not know

how to filter all the other water. Because of the location of the river, the ocean water and

fresh water began to mixed making brackish water. Also most of their food source came

from the river so in the winters and the fall when there weren't many fish in the lake

there was an increase in people starving to death. The new area brought a whole new

environment, which these new settlers did not know how to predict because they had no

knowledge on the area from before.

All in all the settlements in Jamestown, virginia were not successful because of

their lack of skills on how to build a successful colony, a poor relationship with the native

americans, for example them not helping the settlers survive and not sharing their ways

because of the way the new settlers treated the native americans and because of

unexpected environmental conditions such as the new changing seasons that they
weren't prepared on how to handle or know how to deal with. Many people speculate

that if one of these reasons would have been different that the colonies might have

actually been successful or at least not resulting in so many deaths.
