Description N‐Methylpyrrolidone, NMP, is a high boiling, polar aprotic, low viscosity
liquid. NMP has a good solvency for a wide range of organic and inorganic
compounds and it is miscible with water at all temperatures and has a high
chemical and thermal stability. It is used as a solvent for engineering
polymers and coating resins. The polar nature and the low surface tension of
NMP makes it also an excellent cleaning medium and paint stripping solvent.

Fire Risk NMP has a flash point of 91°C and therefore it is considered to be a
combustible liquid. The storage and handling equipment should be designed
to limit fire risks. All types of fire extinguishers can be used against an NMP
fire; also water is effective because of its miscibility with NMP.
According to the National Fire Code guide the hazard values for NMP are:
Fire ‐ 2; Health (under fire conditions) ‐ 2; Reactivity ‐ 0.
First Aid Measures In the event of contact with the skin, remove contaminated clothing under a
shower. Wash skin with plenty of water and soap for at least 15 minutes.
Wash contaminated clothing before re‐use. In case more than half the body
surface was covered by NMP or when the complaints persist, seek medical
attention.
If there is contact with the eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water for at
least 15 minutes. Seek medical aid.
If the product has been inhaled, leave the contaminated area immediately.
Bring patient in fresh air. In the event of coughing, breathing difficulties or
any other symptom, seek medical aid even if these symptoms develop several
hours after the exposure. Apply oxygen when breathing is difficult and
perform artificial respiration in case of respiratory arrest.
In case of ingestion and absence of convulsions, drink large amounts of water
to dilute the substance, induce vomiting and seek medical aid.
