Introduction
Ceylon Biscuits Limited (CBL) was founded in 1968 when the Care Organization and
the Sri Lankan government entrusted the company with manufacturing a high-protein
biscuit to supplement mid-day meals for school children. That year, Ceylon Biscuits
commenced commercial production of biscuits under the brand name Munchee. By
1979, taking note of the high standard and quality of Munchee products, Associated
Biscuits of UK joined hands with Munchee as a partner and commenced producing a
variety of biscuits under the brand name Huntley and Palmer. Having such a
well-established multinational brand manufactured in Sri Lanka for both local and
international markets was a breakthrough.It has evolved into a manufacturing
company with truly international standards, with many state-of-the-art production
lines sourced from Europe, the US, Japan and India.
Use of technology in Ceylon Biscuits Limited.
Technology now impacts all aspects of our lives. It should come as no surprise that
technology has also had a positive impact on business. In fact, there are many
technologies that have already changed the face of business as well as some that are
currently making a big difference. Some of these innovations are making it easier
to start and run a business in many different ways.Typical information systems that

Sales and Marketing departments
The sales and marketing function is responsible for selling the organization’s products

developing products and services to meet their needs, and advertising and promoting
these products and services. Sales is concerned with contacting customers, selling the
products and services, taking orders, and following up on sales. CBL sales department

pipeline. By monitoring these opportunities, sales managers can review stage,
probability, and velocity to improve forecast accuracy also CBL salespeople today are
on mobile devices and not just phones. They are using iPads, laptops, and other
devices that help them routinely during a given day of selling.
CBL marketing department uses a lot of IT systems such as Customer Relationship

Management (CRM), Data Warehouses and Content Management Systems (CMS).
These are often large scale projects and it is the responsibility of IT staff to support
these marketing activities as advertisements at the time of news and busy hrs and
sponsoring TV programs that are watched by target markets. Also adds in radio, web
sites, digital labeled boxes.The company not only concerns about the employees and
market and profits but also the Sri Lankan people and the difficulties they undergo in
the day to day life. The CSR projects they have undertaken shows the interest they
have toward of serving the people in the nation. Munchee Tikiri Shishyadara Scheme
It‟s one of the biggest educational CSR project targeted to the people in the remote
areas and deserving children who had proven their excellence.

CBL finance department in a corporation is in charge of taking accounting data and

investment when the company borrows money to expand its operations. Companies

simplifies bookkeeping. Information technology or IT refers to the software tools and
computer systems the CBL uses to automate these functions and organize the data
flow to improve the management team’s decision making capabilities.

CBL IT department plays an important role in computer communications and other
devices that integrate data, equipment, personnel and problem-solving methods in
planning and controlling business activities. It has a great use in the automated
production of sensitive information ,A good example is a CBL bakery which uses
electronic temperature sensors to detect a drop or increase in room or oven
temperature in a bakery, automated upgradation of the important business processes
and the automated streamlining of the various business processes. It has also played
an important role in the areas of communication and automated administration of
entire systems. The Information Technology Department at CBL Biscuits Ltd is
responsible for supporting company's use of computer technology. The department's
role is to identify, develop, and maintain those technologies that will best serve the
company and assist in accomplishing the company's objectives. The Department is
also responsible for developing, processing, maintaining information that aids in
management decision-making, planning, and forecasting. IT Department also
performs help desk functions as well as budgeting, procuring hardware, software and
trouble shooting.
Departments collaborate
IT systems allow a company to link up every department within the organization.

Information generated by the marketing and sales ,finance divisions can be shared for
example. CBL information is available real-time, meaning as soon as it is created on
the system. Accessing it does not require a great deal of research or manual effort.
The time finance staff used to devote to dig for the numbers they needed can now be
devoted to analyzing and interpreting the information finance’s primary role in the
organization.Marketing and sales,finance,organizations take advantage of
collaborative effort across departments, the concept of each department benefiting
from other departments’ expertise. The finance team acts as in-house consultants to
other departments within the organization. CBL all departments use a centralized IT
system, it drops the barriers that formerly blocked the flow of information.
Advantages and disadvantages

 More time - IT has made it possible for CBL to be open 24 x7 all over the globe.
This means that a business can be open anytime anywhere, making purchases
from different countries easier and more convenient. It also means that can have
goods delivered right to doorstep with having to move a single muscle.
 CBL today more than ever use technology to automate tasks. A good example is a
CBL bakery which uses electronic temperature sensors to detect a drop or
increase in room or oven temperature in a bakery. These sensors send information
directly to the operator, reporting any temperature change. This temperature
system saves the bakery time, and it also results in consistent higher quality
products.
 With the help of communication technology tools like phones, video

conferencing, electronic mail or instant messenger just to mention a few,
movement of information within an cbl organization has become instantaneous.
Employees can easily move data across departments without having any
interruptions.
 Unemployment - While information technology may have streamlined the

business process it has also crated job redundancies, This means that a lot of
lower and middle level sri lankan have been done away with causing more people
to become unemployed.
 Rapid changes in technology can cause a computer to become outdated relatively

quickly, requiring upgrades or replacements on a regular basis for computerized
systems deployed in business use.

No matter where you look, you can see technology and how it has impacted an
aspect of our daily life. It is something that has impacted business as well. Just 20
years ago, times were simpler; but now that technology has come to the scene, it has
taken everything by force, including business as a result of that CBL is a well known
company nationally and internationally. It has been popularizing technology system
every department as to maintain state at the best position.
