AKTPL Cable Termination Guideline
AKTPL Cable Termination Guideline
- Proprietary and
Cable Termination Guideline for Medium
confidential Voltage Gas Insulated RMU
Scope :
This document provides the guideline/recommendation for care to be taken during the cable
termination of 12kv, 24Kv & 36Kv RMU.
In switchgear, major fault occurs due to improper cable termination.
This guideline may help to customer for safe, reliable & trouble free operation of switchgear.
This guideline does not purport to cover all the details or variations in equipment, nor to
provide for every possible contingency to be met in connection with installation/termination.
The content of this guideline shall not become part of or modify any prior or existing agreement
& commitment.
Objective:-
To provide the guideline to customer for proper cable termination in order to prevent the
fault like flash over/Partial discharge/gas leakage/load on bushing/temperature rise on
bushing terminal etc due to improper cable termination.
Cable trench requirement.
Do’s & Don’t for proper cable termination.
Responsibility:
Customer is responsible for following the recommended practice given in this document for
proper termination.
For 12KV:- Non touch proof cable boots will be supplied by “SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC”.
For Touch proof cable boots: 3M & Raychem
Note: Refer catalogue of cable connector manufacture for selection of cable termination
kits/boot as per required cable size.
WARNING
Before proceeding with the guideline described in the coming steps, carefully
check that the following conditions.
• Suitable tools should be used for termination activity which will not
damage the cables or boots during the termination work.
Forbidden! Do not do it
Compliance with this indication is compulsory, non compliance with this
Stipulation may damage the equipment.
√ Recommended action
>15D
Minimum requirement of depth of cable trench (P) for Indoor & plinth in case of Outdoor must
be >15D (where, D is outer diameter of 3 core/1 core cable to be used) for accommodating the
radius of cable.
Cable Routine:-
√ √ √ √
Fig.1a Fig.1b Fig.2 Fig.3a
Fig.1a & 1b:- Use cable grommets provided in single core cable as per outer diameter of
Cable in order to prevent the foreign particles from bottom of cable compartment.
Fig.2 :- Assemble base sheet/cable gland plates after routine the cable to seal the
complete cable compartment from bottom trench.
Fig.3a :- The curvature & length of cable must be adjusted so that no stress is exerted on
the connection interfaces.
√
Fig.3b Fig.4
Fig.3b :- Make sure the cable does not pull on the bushing, It is mandatory to correctly
align the plug in socket.
Fig.4 :- Never use a bar to pull the cable and bring the connection eyelet onto the
bushing, this could damage the bushing and irrecoverable damage to unit.
Note: Check the height of cable bushing to trench & use the termination kit accordingly.
Cable boots & CTs should be inserted after entering the cable inside the cable compartment.
Cable clamping:-
√
Fig.5a Fig.5b Fig.6
Fig.5a & b:- Cable should not kept unclamp, it should be hold at trifurcation by clamped at
entry point at bottom.
R & B phase cable should not bend after termination, it should be straight.
Fig.6:- Below the cable boots three cables should be assembled with separate cable clamps
if provided as shown.
√
Fig.7a: Single core cable clamp
√
Fig.7b
Fig.7a & b:- Cable must be clamp at bottom with clamp, before connecting it to bushing.
Fig.7c
Fig. 7c :- Adjustable cable clamp which fix the cable at angle suitable as per cable radius
after trifurcation.
√ √
Fig.8 Fig.9 Fig.10a Fig.10b
Fig.8:- CTs should not be mounted above the earth point otherwise it leads to PD problems &
Flashover in long term.
Fig.9:- The position of CTs should be straight (it should not be in bend position) & cable
should assemble with cable clamp, also CTs should be assemble with its
mounting (should not be loose).
Fig.10a, b, & c: - For 12 KV, where the termination & cable boots are not touch proof,
hence the placement of CTs are on non earth/unscreened area of cables,
screens (earthing braid) of cable must pass through the CT.
Fig.10c
√
Fig.11
Fig.12
Fig.11:- The CTs must be placed on screen/earth area of cable.
Fig.12:- For 24/36kv, where the cable termination & boots are touch proof, CT can be placed
at any area of cable after anti tracking tube.
Fig.17:- Care must be taken if cable stud reducer is used, stud should be fully inserted in
bushing and there should not be any gap between lug & bushing surface.
Fig.18:- Ensure the cable lug face should match with bushing conductor before crimping the
cable lug with the cable.
• Recommended tightening torque for 12/24 kv RMU is 40Nm for M16 stud size.
• Recommended tightening torque for 36 kv RMU is 50Nm for M16 stud size.
Non compliance of above may lead to higher temperature/ionization & flashover in long term.
Shape of lug:-
Fig.19
√ Fig.20
√ Fig.21
Note:-Lugs come along with termination kit must be used & Hole size of the lug should be
suitable for free entry with bolt/stud.
Fig.20 & 21 :- These types of lugs can be used if in case not supplied by terminator
manufacturer.
Cable boots:-
No Gap
12KV
√ √ 24/36KV
Fig.22:- Cable boots are not inserted fully on bushing, which will lead to higher electrical
stresses and Flashover in long term.
Fig.23:- Cable boots should be inserted fully & cover complete length of bushing.
Fig.24:- Must use only Touch proof/screen cable boots for 24/36KV RMU and it
should be inserted fully & cover complete length of bushing.

If base frame covers requires to open during termination activity, same to be secured correctly with
proper hardware after completion of cable termination activity. If covers / doors are not properly fixed,
IP integrity of RMU will not be guaranteed. Assembly sequence of hardware to be followed as mentioned
above.
Case Studies:-
Case- 01: Incorrect Cable Termination Sequence:
√
Case – 01: Incorrect cable termination sequence – clamping screw inserted first and connector
inserted afterwards, resulted into direct contact of steel nut with the bushing conductor instead
of cable lug. This caused continuous current flow through the steel screw leading to
overheating/melting at this joint. Over a period of time, the situation further deteriorated and
finally resulted into phase to phase and phase to earth flashover due to die-electric failure.
Case – 02: Incorrect cable termination – Use of MS washer in between cable lug and bushing
surface resulted into continuous current flow through the MS washer leading to overheating at
conducting path and further local heating. This local heating led to higher temperature and
flashover over a period of time. Also Lug shape having sharp edges is not as per recommended
shape. Refer below photograph for “Correct Cable Termination” and “Selection of Correct Cable
Lug”
√
Case – 03: Incorrect cable termination sequence – clamping screw inserted first and connector
inserted afterwards, resulted into direct contact of steel nut with the bushing conductor instead
of cable lug. This caused continuous current flow through the steel screw leading to
overheating/melting at this joint.
Case – 04: Cable is not tighten with the cable clamp provided and also CTs are mounted on cable
instead of CT bracket which further led to load on bushing and gas leakage in RMU. Pls refer CT
position and assembly section for more details.
