The passage introduces Simoun, a jeweler who seeks vengeance against those who harmed him and his countrymen. It also shows discussions on a ship traveling to Manila about improving transportation.

Simoun is a jeweler who was once friends with the Prime Minister but now seeks vengeance against those who 'reaped his life and countrymen'. His mission is to return to his homeland and 'exact what those demons had made to him'.

There is a discussion about a plan proposed by Simoun to close the Pasig River and open a new canal to improve transportation and stop sand from rising. However, others argue this would be very costly and disruptive.

Scene 1

Intro:
I have already done keeping silent.
I have already ended my innocence.
I have already stopped my kindness.
Instead, I loved VENGEANCE.
I will comeback to my homeland.
And I will exact what those demons had made to me.
And I will be their own demon too, to deliver them in their own HELL.
I am Simoun, a jeweler. A friend of Prime Minister. The Eminencia Negra. The Grim Reaper for those who
reaped my life and my countrymen. I'm tired of sleeping. I will awake. There's no stopping me to return in
my country whose in era of...
ALL: EL FILIBUSTERISMO!!!

Scene 1
Narrator: Everything starts at Bapor Tabo, a ship whose shaped like a dipper. It will be my first step...my
vessel that will help commence my mission...
(Isang barko. Naroon ang lahat liban kay Kabesang Tales, Juli, Hermana Penchang, Kapitan Tiago, Padre
Florentino, Kapitan Basilio, Basilio, Isagani, Makaraig, at Sandoval. Nasa hiwalay na upuan ang mga pari,
Donya Victorina, Don Custodio, Simoun at ang Kapitan Heneral, nasa hiwalay naman ang natira)
Kapitan: STARBOARD!! BABOR!! OARS UP!! (Some sailors will run at a side)
(Ship Engine)
Donya Victorina:(Naiinis) I hate this ship. Look at that noise! It is awful. Ugh... (pupunta kay Kapitan) But,
Captain, why would those fool sailors want to go there? Why is this moving so slow?
Kapitan: Because, if we speed up to some 10 knots, we will crash to the mountains there(ituturo ang
bundok).
Narrator: This old lady is Donya Victorina, an Indio who pretends to be a European elitist and often joins
with some upper class people to gain attention. A social climber. She hates her own race wearing her thick
make up, but if we peel them off, she will be the same as an old creaky Filipino could be. Some priest could
be observed talking. (Babalik si Donya Victorina sa mga pari)
Padre Camorra: (tatawa) Do you know the capacity of science, Ben Zayb? Just look at that bridge there in
Puerte del Capricho, a bridge made by one of our brothers. They say it will not last long, accordingly to
what their datas and theories say. But hey, it is still intact until now! (Tatawa)
Donya Victorina: Well, there is actually no good lake at all.
(Papasok si Simoun na may tungkod, itim na sumbrero at nakasunglasses. Heads up, chest up. Anyong
mayabang)
Simoun: (slang) The cure is very simple, hahahaha. But I wonder why no one had ever thought about this.
(Tingin lahat kay Simoun)
Simoun: The cure is very simple. And not a single cent shall be wasted.
Don Custodio: What is it?
Simoun: We wil just dig up another straight canal to Manila. For short, we will close the Pasig River, and
open a new one. The transportation will be boosted. And sands will be stopped from rising and hindering
the river flow.
Ben Zayb:(papalakpak) What a good Yankee Plan!
Don Custodio: (Tatayo) Pardon me, my friend, but it will really cost much money. And many settlemens
will be destroyed—
Simoun: Then, destroy!
Don Custodio: And the wage?
Simoun: We do not have to pay them. We will use prisoners instead.
Don Custodio: It is not enough, Mr. Simoun.
Simoun: Then make the nation work. Kids and adults, male and female, shall work for five months. They
will bring their own food.
Don Custodio: But, Mr. Simoun—
Simoun: Let us admit, Don Custodio, that this is the only way to go. It's for their own good. Just remember
how ancient infrastructures like Pyramids were made. People did not revolt—
Don Custodio: But those people are not Indios!
The priests: Yes, you're right.
Simoun: Ha! Revolt? Are you afraid of that?
Padre Salvi: No. But—
Simoun: FOOLISHNESS, FOOLISHNESS, FOOLISHNESS! Wahahaha! (labas sa stage)
Padre Camorra: (susuntukin ang mesa) English Infidel!
Padre Salvi: An American Mulatto! He was just like that because the Prime Minister was his close friend. If
he did not became Prime Ministers pet... I could have smashed him
Don Custodio: I have more better suggestion.
ALL: What is it, Don Custodio?
Don Custodio: What if we use ducks for closing the river? They scratch sands, right? So they can do it.
(Katahimikan. Papalakpak ng sarkastiko si Ben Zayb)
Ben Zayb: (palakpak) wow, wow, wow. Amazing! Cool! So weird...

Scene 2
CHANGE SET
Narrator: I went to lower cabin. There I saw the reality of life—sleeping Chinese merchants, joking
students, some who can't just be in side of elites. They are the true Filipinos.
(Nasa isang tabi si Basilio, Kapitan Basilio, at Isagani)
Kapitan Basilio: How's Kapitan Tiago doing, Basilio? How's it being his personal caregiver?
Basilio: (iiling-iling, hihinga) Still unchanged. Still addicted to that opium, a 19th century chinese illegal
drug. I wonder where he buys that.
Kapitan Basilio: Opium is such a cancer in society...
Basilio: If I prohibit him to do so, he will be weakened, pale. But if I let him a little bit, he will be
energetic, call me as son, and sometimes, will sleep so heavily. But it will worsen his condition...hay...if
only Maria Clara was there with him...
Kapitan Basilio: Back to your proposal to let the students learn Spanish. I assure you it is impossible to
happen—
Isagani: No! Not true, sir. Actually we are just waiting for the approval of the order.
Kapitan Basilio: He can't do anything. Padre Sibyla is the Vice Rector.
Basilio: Then let him oppose! (punch the wall) Padre Irene will go to the Prime Minister for that sake.
Kapitan Basilio: I see. Where will you get the funds?
Sandoval: Our members shall contribute their One-Fourths.
Kapitan Basilio: Who will be the professor?
Makaraig: We had recruited already. Half of them are Filipinos and the other half is Spanish...
Kapitan Basilio: And the building?
Pecson: Rich Gentleman Makaraig will offer one of his huge resthouses.
Kapitan Basilio: I see. It seems that the proposal is not that bad. If our youth can't learn Latin, then let them
learn Spanish at least. But ironically, they don't teach us Spanish—Aetas parentum pejor avis tulit nis
neguiores—like what Horatius said, "the age of our fathers, worse than that of their fathers, has bred us
even worse than them". (Tatayo, aalis)
Basilio: (kay Isagani) By the way, how's your Paulita Gomez?
Isagani: (smiles) She's the most beautiful, the most thrifty, the most lovable, the good speaker. She's the one
for me.
Basilio: And what about that Donya Victorina, her aunt?
Isagani: HEH! Did not matter. If she doesn't want me for her, then who matters?
(Papasok si Simoun)
Simoun: How's your town Basilio? Still the land of poor men who can't afford to buy my jewelries? Hey,
don't feel bad. Let's drink some wine.
Isagani: We're sorry, but we do not.
Simoun: What? That's bad. Padre Camorra said that this country's not energetic due to plain drinking of
water. (Aalis)
Narrator: And I climbed again the upper deck. Just to hear what they are talking.

Scene 3
(Yung sa unang setting na kasama ang Kapitan at lahat)
Donya Victorina: Hey, Captain, is there any legends surrounding this river?
Kapitan: Yes. One that had thrilled me for 13 years straight since it happened. As you can see in the
Horizon, there was the graveyard of once became greatest criminal and his accomplice.
Donya Victorina: Who is that criminal and his accomplice?
Kapitan: I couldn't remember the names though. Guevarra, Rivera, Ibarra...and someone named Jeremias or
Elias.
(Uubo si Simoun)
Ben Zayb: What's the matter, Mr. Simoun? Seasick?
Kapitan: Well, seasick chooses no particular victim. It could attack anyone, so please consider. WE'RE
APPROACHING THE GOVERNMENT'S PORT!!
Narrator: These imbeciles forgot my legend. Well, those true criminals really intended to forget my story so
that they could not feel any guilt. Heh, demons got their tail covered. After I had stepped at last unto my
land, I started my mission—but I need some cracked and dedicated men. And I already met my first choice.
