COLD STORAGE PLANT

Aim: To determine the co-efficient of performance (COP) of cold storage system.

Performance objective:
1. To understand the working and application of cold storage system.
2. Draw the p-H diagram and calculate COP of VCR cycle based cold storage system.

Introduction:
All the foods, which are used by the human being, are drawn from the plants and animal
kingdoms. The different foods grow in the different seasons and many of them are required for
whole year. The lives of different foods are also different according to their microstructure. The
preservation of foods in storage or during transportation is necessary if the life of the food is to be
extended.

The storages, which are used for short period storage purposes, are known as Cold Storages.
Refrigeration Technology plays very important role from the last two decades in food – preservation
technology. Vapour compression refrigeration cycle is a very widely used cycle of refrigeration on
ground, air space and marine applications. It uses a variety of refrigerants such as Ammonia (NH 3),
Freon Group (R12, R22, etc.) and Carbon Dioxide (Co2).

Description:
The walk in cooler is designed to maintain temperature up to 4 0c. (Actual set-up may be
somewhat different than the figure shown below.)

The cooler consists of
a) Chamber: Chamber is constructed out of CRCA / G.I. Sheets with expanded Polystyrene
insulation.
b) Refrigeration unit: The refrigeration unit is vapor compressor refrigeration type
arrangement made up of hermetically sealed compressor.
c) Control panel: The control panel consists of low and high pressure cut – outs, thermostat,
pressure gauges and temperature indicator.
The unit has a lamp inside it which operates on the opening / closing of the door.

Specifications:

1) Compressor : Kirloskar Hermetically sealed. CAJ 7R13.

Cooling capacity 165 lit.
 Refrigerant : _____________
 Current : 5.9 Amp.
 Power Input : 230 V ( 160V – 260V)
 Electrical circuit : CSIR ( Capacitor start induction run)
2) Evaporator : Fan Motor – 20 w.
3) Condenser Fan Motor : Air cooled.
4) Cold Storage capacity : _________Liters.
Internal Dimensions : ______________
External Dimensions : ______________
5) Expansion Device : A capillary tube of matched length.
6) Pressure Guages : ______________
Suction Gauge : ______________
7) Digital Temp. Induction : Multi point temperature indication

Safety:

 HP cutout: High pressure cut out to switch off compressor if condenser pressure exceeds set
pressure in HP side of cutout.
 LP cutout: Low-pressure cutout to switch off compressor if evaporator pressure decreases
below set pressure in LP side of cutout.
 Thermostat: To switch off compressor if champer temperature decreases below set limit.

Operating instructions:

1) Connect the unit to a 15 Amp. Capacity supply point ensures that there are no loose
connections.
2) Check the position of switch (s) on off position.
3) To vary the champer temperatures adjust the thermostat (T5).

4) Switch on the compressor and allow the system to reach to the steady state condition.
5) Note down all readings.
