The Customer is Always Right - Comparing Apps
Scores - Traditional Bank vs. Fintechs
Given the rising importance of Apps in traditional and non-traditional banking, we Latin American Financials
decided to analyze and consolidate our main findings of which bank or fintechs is
doing better from a client perspective. Specifically, we checked ~50 different apps and Domingos Falavina AC
(1-212) 622-3602
reached mixed conclusions. The good news is that Brazilian banks’ apps have first-in-
[email protected]
class scores. Another interesting take is that many of the smaller or more recent
Bloomberg JPMA FALAVINA <GO>
newcomers have a low number of reviews and not great scores leading to a view that
J.P. Morgan Securities LLC
few companies will emerge as winners in this race. Among digital banks, PagBank,
Mercado Pago, Nubank, Inter and Neon were the only apps to receive a score above Yuri R Fernandes
4.0. As a comparison, the large banks we cover have a 4.3 average. On the negative (1-212) 622-3400
side, it surprises us how select fintechs are advancing quickly. Nubank crossed the [email protected]
10mn download mark and is gaining share on google trends vs. banks. The same is J.P. Morgan Securities LLC
also true for PagSeguro, which ranks even better than Nubank on Google trends, but Guilherme Grespan
has been mostly stable since late 2017. We focused our analysis in Google Play as (55-11) 4950-3058
Androids represents about 90% of smartphones in Brazil and as Google Play also [email protected]
provides a round number of total app downloads. More below: Banco J.P. Morgan S.A.
Marlon Medina Robles
Winner per segment. We divided different apps in categories and ranked them (52-55) 5283-1665
based on scores. Not an easy task, as some apps can gravitate in different categories. [email protected]
Overall the winners are: J.P. Morgan Casa de Bolsa, S.A. de C.V.,
J.P. Morgan Grupo Financiero

rank 1st (4.4 rate and 44 review)
Banks’ apps have first in class scores. Large banks under our coverage printed a
4.3 average score, which ranks better than most fintechs. In particular, the average
score of the 12 digital account fintechs we checked was 3.9. This score drops to 3.5
if the top 5 names such as Nubank and PagSeguro are excluded from the list.
Though scores could be polluted, we believe this could indicate challenges that
newcomers may face to grow. Regarding banks, the good score performance for
their apps was somewhat expected in our view given the amount of investment they
have been making.
See page 7 for analyst certification and important disclosures, including non-US analyst disclosures.
J.P. Morgan does and seeks to do business with companies covered in its research reports. As a result, investors should be aware that the
firm may have a conflict of interest that could affect the objectivity of this report. Investors should consider this report as only a single factor in
making their investment decision.

Source: Google App Store. Checked July 1st. Based on banks most popular app – some apps for specific client tier or product could have different rates.
PagBank is the winner. PagBank not only printed the best score among digital
banks, but it also leads vs. all other financial apps such as investment platforms, high
income clients apps, acquiring related, etc.
Nubank crossed the 10mn download line… Public disclosure from Google play does
not say much on the number of downloaded apps. Basically, its rounding system (e.g. 1-
5mn, 5-10mn, 10-50mn, etc.) and precludes more interesting analysis. However, it
highlighted that Nubank already had more than 10mn downloads, which puts them in the
same range as traditional banks. The only Brazilian bank app with more than 50mn
download mark is Caixa Economica. Mercadolibre is another story and the only app to
cross the 100mn download mark.
… And Nubank is also gaining traction on Google trends, though remaining
well below traditional banks. We recognize that large financial conglomerates have
an advantage on this given its broader product basis implying a broader search
universe for the same company. However, it surprises us to see Nubank having about
an 8% share on searches among Top 4 retail banks in the country.

The Titans – Pags More Low Income vs. Nubank High End. PagBank has a
smaller number of downloads (+5mn) than Nubank (+10mn), but has a higher score
(4.8 vs. 4.6) and higher number of reviews (+380k vs. +210k). Moreover, PagSeguro
ranks better than Nubank in Google trends (though Nubank has been gaining traction
since late 2018). True, those are two different stories, but both are usually ranked
among the most disruptive new indicatives in our sector.

Other lessons learned. (i) Stone just started some initiatives but still has few
reviews (below 1k) and we excluded it from our top 1 summary – still we flag it
ranks well in most products; (ii) XP leads on Google trends but by a smaller margin
than anticipated. Though online distribution is just part of the game, we also note
other companies such as Rico and Easynvest ranked well; (iii) Agibank has one of
the best attention to clients, but its scores on Google Play are not great.
Limitation. We found some limitation in our analysis: (i) some of the apps have
been discontinued or receive few updates. For instance, many of Bradesco Cartões
functionalities are already incorporated in bank’s main app. Moreover, traditional
banks can have different features and apps for different tiers of clients; (ii) apps’
segmentation is limited as apps can be used as different segment (e.g. a digital bank
could be more a credit card platform or also an investment platform); (iii) we
ignored apps below 1k reviews; and (iv) some few companies does not interact in
Reclame Aqui (e.g. Rede, Caixa, etc), providing no support and driving poor rates.

Explanation of Equity Research Ratings, Designations and Analyst(s) Coverage Universe:
J.P. Morgan uses the following rating system: Overweight [Over the next six to twelve months, we expect this stock will outperform the
average total return of the stocks in the analyst’s (or the analyst’s team’s) coverage universe.] Neutral [Over the next six to twelve
months, we expect this stock will perform in line with the average total return of the stocks in the analyst’s (or the analyst’s team’s)
coverage universe.] Underweight [Over the next six to twelve months, we expect this stock will underperform the average total return of
the stocks in the analyst’s (or the analyst’s team’s) coverage universe.] Not Rated (NR): J.P. Morgan has removed the rating and, if
applicable, the price target, for this stock because of either a lack of a sufficient fundamental basis or for legal, regulatory or policy
reasons. The previous rating and, if applicable, the price target, no longer should be relied upon. An NR designation is not a
recommendation or a rating. In our Asia (ex-Australia and ex-India) and U.K. small- and mid-cap equity research, each stock’s expected
total return is compared to the expected total return of a benchmark country market index, not to those analysts’ coverage universe. If it
does not appear in the Important Disclosures section of this report, the certifying analyst’s coverage universe can be found on J.P.
