Aim: To prepare and dispense simple syrup I.P.
2. Medicated syrups
Simple flavor syrups: Do not contain any medicament or drug. These syurps are
used as a vehicle for other Liquid preparation to mask the disagreeable taste of
drug.
Medicated syrups: These contain some medicinal substance along with their
other additives. Sucrose concentration in simple syrup is a 66.7%w/w
Procedure:
1. Add water to sucrose in a beaker and heat on water bath until sucrose dissolves
add sufficient boiling water to produce the final volume.
2. Filter hot syrup through cotton wool .Cool the syrup and preservatives may be
added for stability.

Principle: Elixirs are clear, flavored, sweetened hydro alcoholic liquid preparations
for oral administration. The Percentage of alcohol varies from 4 to 40 % in this
elixirs, Paracetamol is used as antipyretic and analgesic. Propylene glycol, ethanol,
and glycerol these are all acts a vehicle and co-solvent to increase the solubility of
poorly soluble ingredients. Chloroform spirit acts as a preservative. Invert syrup
acts a sweetening agent.
Procedure:
Add rest of the ingredients with constant stirring and glycerol to produce
50ml.

Simple Linctus
Aim: To prepare and dispense 20ml of simple linctus BP.
Principle: Linctus are usually intended for use in the treatment of cough, being
sipped and swallowed slowly without the addition of coater. In these simple
linctus citric acid is used in the treatment of mild-non specific cough. Chloroform
spirit are added to preserve preparation. Color is added to improve the esthetic
property. Concentrated peppermint water is added as a flavoring agent and syrup
is add as a vehicle.
Preparation: Dissolve the citric acid in the chloroform, Peppermint water and
amaranth solution. Add the syrup to make the desired volume.

Experiment-5
Principle: Mandls throat paint is the solution of iodine in glycerin. Iodine and
potassium iodide form complexes such as KI, KII, KII2 KII3…... . These poly iodides
are more soluble in solvents like water, glycerin and hydro alcoholic mixture.
These polyiodides because of high solubility keeps iodine in solution. Glycerin is
used as vehicle in preparation to get a prolonged contact of medicament to the
infected surfaces because of its high viscosity. Peppermint oil is used as flavor the
throat paint and to keep it in sol little alcohol is added.

Requirements: Castor oil, Acacia gum, water, mortar & pestle, Beaker &
Measuring cylinder.
Procedure:
3. 4ml of water is measured and transferred into mortar & triturated with gum to
from mucilage.
4. 8ml of castor oil is measured and added to mucilage in small quantities with
continuous trituration.
5. After each addition trituration is briskly done without stopping until a clicking
sound is produced. Then emulsion is known as primary emulsion .Then above
10ml vehicle is added with small quantities at a time with to get the
homogeneous product. Then emulsion is transferred to measuring cylinder &
more of vehicle is added to produce final volume of 30ml & is stirred thoroughly
to get uniform emulsion. The preparation is transferred to bottle lid is placed &
bottle is wiped to remove finger prints, labelled and dispensed.

Camphor Liniment
Aim: To prepare and dispense 10ml of camphor liniment.
Principle: camphor in the preparation acts an counter irritant which reduces pain
from sciatica, fibrosites, neurolgiaect. by producing warm tingling& numeness.
When rubbed into the skin,if they also cause redness, they are called rubefaciants.
Blunt oils such as arachis oil are less irritant and spread easily into the skin which
aids penetration of medicament into the skin and potentiates these counter
irritant and rubefaciant action.
Procedure:

Category: counter irritant, antipyretic.
Causion: Shake well before use should not be applied to broken skin.

in properly folded papers and dispensed in envelopes, metal tails, small heated
plastic bags or other containers. In the given prescription aspirin and paracetamol
acts as a anti-inflammatory and antipyretic agents.
Procedure:
1. Weigh the calculated amount of aspirin and paracetamol and mix them

Experiment-20
Requirements: china dish, Glass rod, spatula, Iodine, arachis oil, wool fat, yellow
soft paraffin.
Principle: It is called non-staining ointment because does not leave the stain of
iodine over the rubbed part of skin because here iodine is not in free from but it is
in the combined form of Di-iodostearic acid which does not give the stain. Here
the iodine is used as antibacterial agent and acts as a counter irritant. It is
prepared by chemical reaction method.
Procedure: Powder iodine in a mortar and add arachis oil in glass stoppered
conical flask and stir well.
Heat the above mixture at about 50oc on a water bath till the brown colour
changes to greenish black colour.
Melt yellow soft paraffin and add to the iodised oil mix well and pour into a warm
pot and allow cooling without further stirring and label it.
