Introduction to the

Prep Test
The Prep Test is an ideal introduction to the exam experience.
It gives students a goal to work towards with a certificate awarded
on the day - something to be really proud of.

Subjects Requirements
• Piano • Flute • Flugelhorn The Prep test takes about 10 minutes
• Violin • Oboe • Eb Horn and includes:
• Viola • Clarinet • Trombone • Tunes/exercises
• Cello • Bassoon • Baritone • Set piece/song
• Double Bass • Saxophone • Euphonium
• Own choice piece/song
• Guitar • Horn • Singing
(about 16 to 24 bars)
• Descant • Trumpet
Recorder • Cornet • Listening games/simple aural tests*

*Candidates with specific needs should enclose a covering letter or supporting assessment with their entry.
The Prep Test encourages the development of good musical and
technical foundations before students take graded exams. The test
covers many of the elements beginners will be working on at this
early stage, including pitch, time, tone, shape, performance and
musical perception.

Accompaniment
Our examiners will be happy to
play any piano accompaniments
so please bring the music on
the day, or you can bring your
own accompanist.

Publications
We publish Prep Test books for
each subject listed. They contain
all the requirements, apart from
the own choice piece.
