    Review of Dead Star

    by Paz Marquez Benitez

    This short story was the first modern Philippine short story in
    English. It conveys the theme of ‘Forbidden Love’. The story revolves
    around Alfredo Salazar’s dilemma towards Esperanza and Julia Salas. He
    was stuck between two choices: “Do what is right or Follow my heart”.

    The story starts when Carmen, his sister, by asking questions about
    his marriage. Alfredo reminisce the time she met Esperanza. He met Julia
    Salas at Judge Del Valle’s house. He soon realized he was in love with Julia
    Salas. They spend a lot of time together. Julia found out about Alfredo’s
    wedding. Alfredo was caught up in a dilemma. Julia didn’t want to
    interfere with Alfredo and Esperanza’s life and says goodbye. Alfredo
    went home to Esperanza. Alfredo and Esperanza got married. After years,
    Alfredo went to Julia’s hometown to find an important lady for his defense.
    He went to Julia’s house and found her still unmarried.

    This story taught me about the situations in life that we may


    encounter and perceive it as the greatest dilemma in our life. It doesn’t
    have to be that way. All it takes is critical thinking, knowing yourself truly,
    and sticking to your decisions without regret.
