Maria writes test in English to upgrade her level. The test has 25 questions for a total
score of 105 points. Among the 25 questions, each multiple choice questions carries 3
points and the descriptive type questions carries 8 points. How many multiple choice
and descriptive type questions are there in the test.
Solution:
x + y = 25 let x = No. of multiple choice questions
3x + 8y = 100 y = No. of descriptive type questions
Solve for y:
-3 (x + y = 25) - 3x – 3y = -75
3x + 8y = 105 3x + 8y = 105
5𝑦 30
=
5 5
y=6
Solve for x: y = 6
x + y = 25
x + 6 = 25
x = 25 – 6
x = 19
Therefore, there are 6 multiple choice questions and 19 descriptive type of questions.
QUESTION: (AGE PROBLEM)
Peter is twice as old as his son. Ten years from now Peter will be twice as old as his
son. How old are they now.
Solution:
Let y be the present age of Peter
Let x be the present age of his son.
Write the statement “In ten years, Peter will be twice as old as his son” can be
symbolized as y = 2x + 10.
Eq. 1. y = 3x
2. y = 2x +10
Substitution:
a. Solve for x.
y = 2x + 10
3x = 2x + 10
x = 10
b. Solve for y.
y = 3 (10)
y = 30
Therefore, the son is 10 years old now while peter is 30 years old now.
Problem:
Three points are defined as follows: A(-2,1), B(6, 1) and C(-2, 7).
a. Find the midpoint M of segment BC
b. Find the lengths of the line segments MA, MB and MC.
c. Find the equation of the circle that passes through the three points A, B and C.
Solution:
a. M: (2,4)
b. L(MA) = √16 + 9 = 5
L (MB) = √16 + 9 = 5
L (MB) = √16 + 9 = 5
c. The three points are at equal distances from point M and therefore point M is the
center of the circle, hence the equation is given by (𝑥 − 2)2 + (𝑦 − 4)2 = 25
PROBLEMS:
1. Find the equation o the line and describe the graph that passes through the point
(4, -1) and perpendicular to the line y = x + 3.
SOLUTION:
Since m = 1, y = x+3 and 𝑙1 Ʇ 𝑙2 , then 𝑚2 = -1
y – (-1) =-1(x-4)
y+1 = -x + 4
y = -x + 4-1
y = -x +3
Since 𝑚2 = −1
Therefore, the slope is negative and line falls from left to right.
2. Find the slope – intercept from of the line whose y – intercept is thrice the x –
intercept and is passing through (2, -4) and describe the trend of the graph.
SOLUTION:
𝑦 −𝑦
(0, y) M = 𝑥2−𝑥1
2 1
3𝑥−0
(0, 3x) M= 0−𝑥
3𝑥
(x,0) = −𝑥 or -3
(2,-4)
y = mx + b y = -3x + 2
-4 = -3 (2) + b ∴ the slope is negative then the line falls from left to right.
-4 = -6 +b
-4 + 6 = b
2=b
