Asenjo is a Filipino poet, novelist, translator and literary scholar in Kinaray-


a, Hiligaynon and Filipino. Her first novel, Lumbay ng Dila, (C&E/DLSU, 2010) received a
citation for the Juan C. Laya Prize for Excellence in Fiction in a Philippine Language in the
National Book Award.

Genevieve L. ASENJO (fiction writer, poet, translator; Philippines) is the author of


four books including Lumbay ng Dila (The Melancholy of the Tongue), winner of the
country’s 2011 National Book Award. Her short stories and poems have appeared in
many magazines and anthologies. She translates into the Philippine languages
Kinaray-a, Hiligaynon, and Filipino, and is the founder-director of Balay
Sugidanun (Storytelling House). She is Associate Professor of literature and creative
writing at De La Salle University-Manila. Her participation is made possible by a
grant from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of
State.

there are two types of living in the philippines: life in the city or a life in the province. living in the
province is relaxing and peaceful there are no hustle sounds from the cars and buses or noise from
people. there no polluted air like in the city and people wake up in the morning with fresh air. there is a
friendly neighborhood wherein everybody knows everybody and respects each other. a story about the
promdi means "probinsiyana or probinsiyano" by Genevieve L. asenjo.. asenjo was a filipino poet,
novelist, translator and literary schoral in kinaray-a, hiligaynon,and filipino. she is an associated
professor at de la salle university in manila, she a collected of poetry in kinaray-a with translation in
filipino and that is promdi@manila. the story started when julia sebastian she wants to come in manila.
julia a 25 years old assistant creative director, and her sister. neighbor teray their "manikurista" and
carpenter fred, teray's husband, when they were in high school. julia idolized the people from manila
because when they come back their skin lighter, have on trend outfits and lots of money. and because of
that she wants to go manila and buy the bread and biscuits they always bring. and she study in college
to manila. at first julia was not used in her new environment because it was over crowded unlike
antique. she study at UP and she became an assistant creative director in harrison communication. she
was a writer for three years before she got promoted. one day she receive a text from teray. teray
wanted to meet julia. but julia send the english word,julia realized that teray might get hurt of what she
composed, so she erased it. julia was thinking whether there was someone else in her barangay who
could go with teray but she could not contact the people she knew. julia was annoyed because she could
not say no but she was also afraid that something bad might happen to teray. she got confuse on what
to do: go to the last day of a cinema or go to teray. julia walked back and forth thinking how to fetch
teray because all the people in her directory were not available. they met in the church.julia was so
worst. they just got out from the church and julia knew that it will be a long talk. she wanted to sit and
she also hungry. teray wants to go jollibee .. because teray go back to province she tell them she already
eat the fried chicken endored by aga. they talked while having their lunch. julia kept on asking what
happened to teray and her family. she found out that teray stopped being a maid to a generals family
because they dont treat her right. she also knew that teray has a lot of unpaid bills. teray took out the
list of contacts of people where she could stay for a week before she will go to antique. teray said she
just wants to buy these things pants of acay because he really want that, and fred briefs, and new nipper
and colorful on trend nail polish for me, but julia go to rest room. because her eyes was watery and she
realized that her one trip in dermclinic or davids salon is expensive than what teray wants to buy.
