Lab Report (Factor Affecting The Voltage of An Electrochemical Cell)
electrochemical cell)
Research question:
How changing the concentration of CuSO4 affects the voltage of an
electrochemical cell?
Aim:
To find out how changing the concentration of CuSO4 will affect the voltage
of an electrochemical cell.
Hypothesis:
If we increase the concentration of CuSO4 then the voltage of the
electrochemical will increase because the number of cations and anions
increase. Whereas if we decrease the concentration the voltage of an
electrochemical cell decreases because the number of cations and anions
decreases.
Variables:
Independent variable: concentration of CuSO4
Dependent variable: voltage of electrochemical cell
Controlled variable: concentration of ZnSO4
Temperature
Volume of CuSO4 and ZnSO4
Control of variables:
Concentration of ZnSO4 was kept 0.1 M throughout the experiment.
I kept the temperature the same by measuring it with a thermometer it was
kept constant throughout the experiment.
Volume of CuSO4 and ZnSO4 was kept constant by keeping it 50 mL
throughout the experiment. I made sure it was 50 mL by using a measuring
beaker.
All the controlled variables were kept the same to make sure it was a fair test
throughout the experiment.
Materials:
CuSO4 (0.5M, 0.1M, 0.01M)
ZnSO4 (0.5M)
Zinc metal (1)
Copper metal (1)
Beaker (2)
Sand paper (1)
Filter paper (salt bridge) (1)
Potassium nitrate
Voltmeter (1)
Crocodile clip (2)
Set up:
Procedure:
Use steel sandpaper to polish the metal strips.
Place 50 mL of the 0.1 M ZnSO4 solution in a 50-mL beaker. Place a
strip of polished zinc metal in the beaker.
Place 50 mL of the 0.5 M CuSO4solution in a 50-mL beaker. Place a
strip of polished copper metal in the beaker.
Connect alligator clip probes to the voltmeter. Connect the clips to the
metal strips.
Cut a strip of filter paper and soak it in KNO3 solution and slowly lower
it so both sides of the filter paper touch the contents of both beakers.
Measure the reading on the volt meter.
Repeat this for CuSO4 of concentration 0.1M and 0.01M.
Raw data table:
TRIAL 1:
0.5 0.1 1V
0.1 0.1 0.9 V
0.01 0.1 0.8 V
TRIAL 2:
Processed data:
CuSO4 ZnSO4 Voltage
0.5 M 0.1 M 0.95
0.1 M 0.1 M 0.85
0.01 M 0.1 M 0.8
Observation:
Concentration increases the voltage increases and if concentration
decreases the voltage also decreases.

Graph analysis:
By looking at the graph we can conclude that as the concentration of CuSO4
decreases the voltage of the electrochemical cell also decreases.
Concentration is directly proportional to voltage in an electrochemical cell.
The line in the graph is also showing decrease in the voltage of an
electrochemical cell.
Conclusion:
By conducting the experiment, we can say that as the concentration of
copper sulfate decreases the voltage of the electrochemical cell also
decreases. The concentration of zinc sulfate was kept the same throughout
the experiment and the controlled variables was also maintained the same
throughout the experiment which made this experiment a fair experiment and
let no error take place.
The results obtained demonstrate that the hypothesis stated was indeed
correct. The voltage did decrease when the concentration of copper sulfate
decreased as stated in the hypothesis. More concentration means more
anions and cations are present in the solution which makes the voltage rise in
the electrochemical cell.
Evaluation:
According to me the experiment was a fair test no error also took place as the
controlled variable was controlled throughout the experiment. There also no
flaws in the procedure.
For improvements more, trials could have been done for a better accurate
result.
