▲ MICK NOLAN’S
O GAUGE LAYOUT
Just one look at this absolutely
spectacular photo snapped on
Mick Nolan’s O gauge railroad
and you’re likely to forget this is
a modeled scene. Instead, you’ll
feel as though you’ve been hik-
ing in western Canada and
chanced upon a handsome
Canadian National cab unit
grinding uphill in and out of
tunnels. The realistic scenery
Mick built for his layout in
Houston, Alaska, blends with
the mountain backdrops and
clouds in the frigid sky.
▲ ROGER WASSON’S
O GAUGE LAYOUT
Autumn has returned to the
Middle West, so it comes as no
surprise to see the colors of the
leaves in the photo backdrop
Roger Wasson installed on his
Solid Rock RR change. Against
that vivid scene a Frisco GP7
road diesel pulls a short freight
train over the tall wood trestle
Roger built from scratch for his
30 x 34-foot home layout in
Springfield, Mo. Photographing
trains has been as enjoyable as
operating them for this dedi-
cated O gauger, whose railroad
will soon be showcased in
Classic Toy Trains.

rain layouts do not need to be painstak-
ingly detailed to look realistic. Often the
simplest solution, such as hiding wire con-
nections beneath everyday objects, is
enough to preserve a strong impression of reality.
For example, Photo 1 shows some typical station
activity, with two passengers heading for the depot
after leaving a departing train. Two others are con-
sulting with a police officer in his vintage squad car,
and a portly gentleman is hurrying to catch a
departing taxi.
PHOTO 1 (RIGHT): The authenticity of a setting is
compromised by anything that seems out of place, such
as the wiring nuts on this prewar station.

and detract from the realism of the scene.
In Photo 2 you’ll probably find that
you pay little attention to the base of the
station. Or if you do, it’s only to take note
of two items typically found outside any
depot: a barrel and a packing case stand-
ing on the sidewalk. Nothing visually
upsets the sense of scale and the appro-
priateness of the scenic elements.
You can find inexpensive items at any
hobby store to conceal wiring connec-
tions on a layout. Look for hollow barrels
and packing cases of an appropriate size.
These may be found in varying sizes and
colors and have the advantage of adding
details to a scene. Don’t overlook items
made for other scales; an HO scale barrel
may be perfect to fit over an O gauge nut.
An assortment of such items is shown in
the foreground of Photo 3.

ainting with a very wide brush,
most O gauge 0-4-0 switchers tend
toward the bottom quarter of the
market in price, detailing, and
operation. In the railroad world, the role
of these small locomotives is almost
entirely limited to shunting cars around a
yard or industrial plant.
It’s a given that they aren’t going to be
found on the front of a trans-continental
express! But just because you don’t have a
glamorous job doesn’t mean that you can’t
stand out from the crowd.
This Premier Line model from MTH
Electric Trains is based on the Pennsylva-
nia RR A5-class steam switcher. This was a
nimble little engine ideal for getting
freight cars in and out of tight industrial
settings. Though some 47 were built
between 1916 and 1924, just a single
example exists today. The Railroad
