Are Beauty Pageants good influence for young generation?

A beauty pageant or beauty contest is a competition that mainly focuses on the

physical beauty of its contestants. The contests often incorporate personality, talent,
and answers to judges’ questions as criteria. The phrase almost invariably refers only to
contests for women and girls; similar events for men or boys are named otherwise and,
most likely deal with body physique. Winners of beauty contests are called beauty
queens. The first modern pageant was staged by P. T. Barnum in 1854, but his beauty
contest was closed down by public protest. He previously also held dog, baby, and bird
beauty contests. Modern beauty pageants as we know them today are traceable to the
Miss America Beauty Pageant, which was first held in Atlantic City in 1921 under the
title “Inter-city beauty contest”. Since then, beauty pageants have generally gained
acceptance in most societies leading to the emergence of several local, national and
international pageants across the world.

Increased exposure for personal and professional endeavors, gain personal

development skills through coaching and preparation, acquire opportunities to
communicate your vision and goals efficiently and concisely, and have the ability to
inspire others to believe in themselves with your confidence and determination to be
successful. Pageantry also teaches you how to handle stress by learning to deal with
pressure and disappointments. The Philippines inherited the practice and promotion of
beauty pageants from the Kingdom of Spain and United States who colonized the
country and reflected its obsession with pageantry through the Santero culture.
Accordingly in 1970s, they were popularized during the tenure of former Philippine
President Ferdinand Marcos and his wife, Imelda Marcos. The first official beauty
pageant in the Philippines was held in 1908 during the Manila Carnival, which organized
both American and Philippine diplomatic relations, and to exhibit achievements in
commerce and agriculture. Crowning its winner as the “Carnival Queen”, which was
held annually from 1908 -1938. In 1926, the Manila Carnival conceptualized and held
the first national beauty pageant using the title Miss Philippines to represent the
Philippine islands, contestants came from all over the country with the following regional
titles: Miss Luzon, Miss Visayas, and Miss Mindanao. This new competition gained
greater popularity, resulting the phasing out of the “Carnival Queen” title in 1938.

MANILA, Philippines - On a vast stage with flashing lights and blaring music, 30
women in haltered gold lame dresses twirl and prance in choreographed unison. Their
long hair bounce on their shoulders, smiles big and wide, as they sway along, raise their
arms and shake their hips - all on their sky-high heels. They dance together to "Manila
Girl", like they're in a noontime show. In their sparkling gowns and fancy suits, the
audience - actors, singers, and some politicians including a former president - all lap it
up. The rest of the crowd cheer, chanting names and carrying banners plastered with
photos of the women’s faces. Welcome to yet another beauty pageant, a regular
spectacle in the Philippines which often draws crowds by the hundreds. In the next few
hours, the women will go from wearing their bright metallic dresses to just a bikini,
before reappearing on stage in long evening gowns - showcasing themselves from
every angle. A handful will then make it through to the final stages of the contest and
answer questions from the judges in less than a minute, and at the end of the night, 4
grueling hours later, and one woman will wear a crown. At the Philippine International

In the Philippines, beauty pageants are a national obsession. Many young girls
are urged by their parents or older relatives to join beauty pageants because of the
prestige that comes with winning. Filipinos are exposed to beauty contests at a young
age due to their ubiquity with pageants being a staple in every community. "In the
Philippine setting, pageants are an institution that will not fade away. Every sitio, barrio,
barangay, local town and city holds and conducts its own beauty pageant yearly. Its part
of our culture," Pawee Ventura, a pageant follower and frequent judge at international
pageants, told Rappler in 2013.
