General Trias, officially the City of General Trias, (Tagalog: Lungsod ng General Trias),
or simply known as General Trias City, is a 1st class city and the 6th District of the province of
Cavite, Philippines with it's zipcode of 4107.
Nickname: Gentri
Land area of 81.46 square kilometer
It has a population of 314,303 according to the 2015 census
City of General Trias was founded on December 13, 1748
June 1, 1898 when the San Francisco de Malabon was being retrieved by the Filipino
Revolutionary from Spaniards.
General Trias is considered as the third largest town in Cavite. It serves a host to various
industrial estates such as Gateway Business Park, New Cavite Industrial Estate and Cavite Export
Zone.
Other than the charming old houses, one cannot help but be in awe of the religious
structures like St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Our Lady of Guadalupe Church and Church of San
Francisco de Malabon. The façade of these churches alone is a living testament that history is
written all over General Trias.
Renamed as General Trias
Year 1914, originally named after its Patron Saint, Francis of Assisi (1181 – 1226).
The old town of San Francisco de Malabon used to be a big municipality comprising its
present area plus Sta. Cruz de Malabon or Malabon el chico (now known as Tanza), and Rosario
(formerly known as Tejeros), and often time called by revolutionary named Salinas. When the
town was made independent from Cavite el Viejo, it was finally called by its popular name San
Francisco de Malabon, in honor of patron saint, Saint Francis of Assisi (1181-1226).
On 28 February 1914, Act No. 2390 was passed by the Philippine Assembly, changing
the town's name to Malabon. The name Malabon was speculated to have been derived from either
the local term "maraming labong," due to the abundance of bamboo shoots in the area, which is a
main ingredient in Filipino cuisine; or from "mayabong," referring to the trees and other plants
once abundant in the place.
At any rate, the first reference seems to be more probable because General Mariano Trías,
a noted writer, adopted the nom de guerre "Labong," a word he often used in his writing and
conversation. Grande, on the other hand, was affixed to the appellation because at the time, the
place was a vast wilderness covering Sitio Tejero, frequently called by the revolutionary as Salinas
(present-day Rosario), Sta. Cruz de Malabon or Malabon el Chico (present-day Tanza) and Tierra
Alta (present-day Noveleta).
On February 24, 1920, Act No. 2889 was approved renaming the town after one of its
most famous son, General Mariano Trías. It is now known as General Trias.
Mariano Trías y Closas born on October 12, 1868 and died on February 22, 1914 is
considered to be the first de facto Philippine Vice President of that revolutionary government
established at the Tejeros Convention - an assembly of Philippine revolutionary leaders that elected
officials of the revolutionary movement against the colonial government of Spain. When that
assembly broke into factions, a truce known as the Pact of Biak-na-Bato was signed by the group
and also recognized the elected officials and Trias as the vice president of Emilio Aguinaldo, who
is also considered to be the first President of the Philippines. With the promulgation of the Malolos
Constitution by the Malolos Convention, the First Philippine Republic was born. Under this
Aguinaldo administration, Trias served in the cabinet initially as Secretary of Finance and, later,
as Secretary of War. He was married to María Concepción Ferrer with whom he had eight children.
Cityhood
On 19 August 2015, Philippine President Benigno S. Aquino III signed Republic Act No.
10675 which converted the municipality of General Trias into a component city of Cavite. The bill
finally came into full effect after majority of the city's residents voted yes to cityhood through a
plebiscite.General Trias thus became the seventh city in the province and the 145th in the country.
Lone District of General Trias
On 14 September 2018, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte signed Republic Act No.
11069 reapportioning the province of Cavite into eight legislative districts to make General Trias
the province’s sixth legislative district.
Religion
A vast majority of inhabitants are Roman Catholics while Protestanism is the second largest
denomination in the city.
Language
General Trias is one of the Hispanic towns in the Philippines because of these Spanish
speakers are present in the town. Filipino, English and Spanish are the most used language in the
area especially in Buenavista (also known as Camaren) because this has been the hide out of the
Spaniards during their era.
Industrial estates
General Trias has been gradually undergoing industrialization since the turn of the 21st
century. Several major industrial estates, such as Gateway Business Park, a world class business
community in Javalera and the New Cavite Industrial City (NCIC) in Manggahan, have chosen
General Trias to be their home base.
The Cavite Export Processing Zone (CEPZ) occupies about 0.60 square kilometres of land
belonging to General Trias. 110 factories operate in the CEPZ. The others are the Golden Gate
Industrial Park (Phase I) in Buenavista II and Golden Gate Industrial Park (Phase II) in
Panungyanan while the rest are found at Barangay Manggahan, Barangay San Francisco and along
Governor's Drive.
Private Subdivisions
General Trias is considered one of the new frontiers of growth and development in the
CALABARZON area as attested by the giant industrial subdivisions located in the city. Many of
these are in the highland barangay of Manggahan, located along Governor's Drive, the barangays
of San Francisco, Santiago in Arnaldo Highway, and barangay Pasong Camachille II in Open
Canal Road.
