SPILLWAY
INTRODUCTION
When the water in the reservoir increases, the large
accumulation of water endangers the stability of the dam
hence structure is provided in the body of a dam or near the
dam or periphery of the reservoir. This structure is called as
spillway.
Spillways release floods so that the water does not
overtop and damage or even destroy the dam. Except during
flood periods, water does not normally flow over a
spillway. In contrast, an intake is a structure used to release
water on a regular basis for water supply, hydroelectricity
generation, etc.

CASE STUDY
Spillway of Tehari dam
The Tehri Dam is the tallest dam in India and one of the tallest
in the world. It is a multi-purpose rock and earth-
fill embankment dam on the Bhagirathi
River near Tehri in Uttarakhand.
Spillway of Tehari dam is chute gate controlled spillway and the
capacity of spillway is 15,540 m3/s.

SPILLWAY
Water spills over its lip when the lake reaches 1,602,000 acre
feet (1.976×109 m3) and a reservoir elevation of 440 feet
(130 m) above sea level. The last time the reservoir spilled
through the glory hole was on the morning of May 18, 2006.
Current lake level status is available at Solano County Water
Agency.

CONCLUSION
A spillway is a structure used to provide the controlled
release of flows from a dam or levee into a downstream
area.
