Overview of the Company
Columbia Wire and Cable Corporation ( CWCC )is an organization engaged in
the manufacture of electric wire and cable products. It started in 1964 as Silicon
Manufacturing Corporation in San Francisco Del Monte until it was transferred in 1972
to its present location at 75 Howmart Rd., Bo. Kangkong, Quezon City.
In 30 May 1973, it was registered with the Security and Exchange Commission
(SEC) as Columbia Wire and Cable Corp. And in 01, June 1973, it started its
commercial operation with forty (40) employees and a starting capacity of 75 MT/month.
Since the beginning, Total Customer Satisfaction has been the focal point of the
company’s operation. This is achieved by strictly complying with nationally and
internationally published standards by the Bureau of Product Standards (BPS), Institute
of Integrated Electrical Engineers (IIEE), Underwriters Laboratory (UL) and the
American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). To further boost customers’
confidence in CWCC’s products, a Quality System compliant with the ISO 9001:2000
(now, ISO 9001:2008) has been established and is continually improved and
maintained.
After 25 years of operation, CWCC has grown to an organization of 320
employees and a capacity of 5,500 MT a year, manufacturing a substantial number of
product mix in terms of size, type, and voltage rating (up to 35,000 volts of insulated
power cables).

Raw Material and Product of the Company

CCW main raw materials are electrical grade copper wire rods or drawn wires of
different gauges and insulation grade compounded PVC, polyethylene, Teflon, PVDF,
etc. polymers and color pigment. Fire and flame retardants, compounding materials like
calcium carbonate, stabilizers, and plasticizers may also be required. The end product
of CCWC are power cables wires, telephone cable wires, fire rated cable, portable
cords and control cables.
Processes involve to produce their product
There are two main steps to be considered in manufacturing wires and cables in
CCWC
Step 1: Annealing. All wires undergo a heat treatment called annealing to
increase the ductility and conductivity of the copper
Step 2: Stranding. Annealing is followed by a stranding step in which the copper
wires are grouped together to make conductors with different cross-sections.
Step 3: Insulation. It involves the placement of an insulating cover over the
conduction to prevent current leakages
Step 4: Laying up. Workers of CCWC allows putting together the various
elements of the cable into its core, can be done in one or several steps
Equipment used in the processes
Below are the list of equipment used in CCWC that is introduced during plant
tour:
1. Flexibility Tester
2. Profile Projector for Insulation Thickness Measurement
3. Tensile Machines (for metal and insulation)
4. Wire Drawing and annealing machine
5. Wire/cable coating machine
6. Shield/Armor Braiding machine

Safety Management:
The safety management of Columbia Wire and Cable Corporation are the following:
 Wearing of gloves, goggles and boots on work.
 Active closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras (24/7)
 First medical assistance

Best practices
In CCWC. Once the cable is manufactured, CCWC cables verifies the quality of
all cables by carrying out rigorous checks before shipping items. In order to guarantee
the high quality required by CCWC cables buyers/customers, cables undergo extensive
quality control checks in our laboratories, thus, ensuring that all the cables are free from
defects and are ready to be sold. he quality guarantee system ensures that all cables
perform as per their specifications. Also these are the following best practices of
Columbia Wire and Cable Corporation:
 Safety inspection of work place and workers
 Weekly Inspection
 Quarterly inspection and maintenance of equipments

Environmental Impact
According to the CCWC policy. Recycling of production cable waste. The failed
production of wire and cables, instead of delivering it to a bin, it will be remanufactured
as part the environmental and economic implications.

Observation and Recommendation:

As I noticed, more than 1 section in CCWC manufacturing area has an unbearable
noise. Considering hazard assessment, some of the area incorporate with loosen parts
on a certain machine. I recommend a snug place, plant tour presentation before the actual
process viewing, machines with tags and instruction including the workers and operators,
safety management chart before entering the production are and bigger are for
discussion/ conference rooms.
