Mercutio got into a fight with Tybalt after Tybalt challenged Romeo to a duel. Mercutio fought Tybalt instead of Romeo.

Tybalt fatally stabbed Mercutio during their fight.

Script for Play

Act 1

Scene 1

Narrator: Lord Capulet

This is a tale of friendship, love, and tragedy following both childhood friends Romeo Montague
and my

daughter Juliet Capulet.

It all started with an argument between the servants of both the families of the Montagues and
Capulets. Which led to violence between the two families. Prince Escalus noticed this and
declared that all people who fight on the streets of Verona must be killed.

This event would then be described as the "ancient grudge".

Scene 2

Romeo and Mercutio wander around the party after sneaking in and sees Benvolio.

Romeo waves to Benvolio, and he waves back

Romeo

Benvolio! (shakes his hand)

Romeo

We snuck in here to see the ball. Oh, and this is my friend Mercutio and my cousin Benvolio. I
hope you two would get along.

Benvolio

You must be lucky. The place is heavily protected but you still managed to sneak in.
Mercutio

Come on, let's have a good time! Let's keep a low profile though, someone might see us.

Juliet passes by and locks eyes with Romeo like they knew each other before.

Scene 3

Tybalt

notices Romeo and his friends are present at the ball

You, you snuck in here, didn't you?! (points at both Benvolio and Mercutio)

Mercutio

No we didn't you're delusional we were invited!

Tybalt

Is that so? (yells into the crowd) Speak up! Which of you invited them?

Silence fills the room

Tybalt

Liars, no-one would ever invite you here. Romeo, son of the Montague family, I challenge you
into a duel!

Scene 4

(whispers and gossips are heard from the crowd)

Tybalt

(yells in the crowd) Silence!

Romeo

Utter nonsense, Tybalt! I refuse to have a battle with you!

Scene 5

Mercutio

Stop being a coward, Romeo! Just go ahead and fight!

Romeo

I can't, I see him as a potential friend.

Mercutio

Aaah! (screams) If you won't do it, then I will! (charges towards Tybalt)

Narrator: Lord Capulet

Mercutio and Tybalt exchange punches with each other. Then it became a one-sided fight in
favor of Tybalt.

Tybalt pushes Mercutio to the ground and tries to choke him. Romeo tries to separate the two
from each other.

Romeo

Enough! We were supposed to have a good time!

Mercutio, what happened about keeping a low profile?!

Mercutio

It doesn't matter, you coward! I'll have this battle even if you don't want too. I've been waiting
for the day to beat one of the Capulets with my own hands!

Tybalt smiles and giggles and takes out a dagger from the bottom of his left leg. He charges and
stabs him directly to the left side of his chest.

Romeo

Runs to Mercutio's side.

Tybalt! What have you done?!

You'll pay for this!

Romeo charges Tybalt and throws away the dagger in Tybalt's hand. In anger, Romeo strangles
Tybalt in his own hands, killing him on the spot.

Scene 6

Narrator: Lord Capulet

Prince Escalus entered the ball. He was greeted with people panicking, two dead bodies and a
raging ROMEO in despair.

Prince Escalus

What kind of madness has been occurring in this place!

(sees ROMEO beside the corpse of MERCUTIO and TYBALT)

You, tell me what happened! (points at BENVOLIO)

Benvolio
(stuttering) Aaah… Tybalt, it's his fault he uhh… he tried to kill us! He started it!

Prince Escalus

It doesn't matter! Romeo Montague, you must be punished with death!

Romeo

What no I… I-its not my fault you heard him, right?! (sobbing)

Prince Escalus

(intimidating voice) Oh, Romeo, you murdered a man. Can't you see the chaos that occurred in
this room?

Romeo

No, It's not my fault!

(runs away)

Prince Escalus

We'll be searching for you, Romeo! We'll find you one day!

Act 2

Scene 7

Narrator: Lord Capulet

After Romeo escaped the ball, he sneaked into Juliet's chamber to talk to her.

Romeo sneaks into Juliet's chamber

Juliet

sees Romeo

(surprised) Romeo? What are you doing here? You can't be here and you know that!

Romeo

I knew it was you, Juliet, my love but I have something to tell you.

Juliet

I knew it was you from the start. Oh, ROMEO, I miss you so much.

Romeo

But, I have something important to say…

(quiet and sad voice) Juliet, Prince Escalus is out there hunting me. He saw me kill Tybalt, but it
was just for revenge!

Juliet

(shocked) What?! Why did you kill him?! That must be why the Prince was there that night. I
was clueless!

Romeo

Tybalt killed Mercutio! It was only for revenge!

Juliet

You know you still shouldn't have done that, Romeo!

Romeo
I know Juliet, and I'm sorry! I'm running out of time, I need to go. Please promise me that you
will only love me!

Juliet

I promise ROMEO.

Romeo

After 10 years, Juliet, I'll come back. We'll live a happy life! Please keep this promise, Juliet.
You'll always be in my mind.

Juliet

My heart will wait for you, Romeo. I'll wait for you.

Romeo

Goodbye!

leaves

Juliet

Goodbye, Romeo!

Scene 8

Voiceover: Lord Capulet

Juliet stayed strong to keep their promise, but after 7 years, I forced her to marry Paris.

(Acting) Lord Capulet

You must marry Paris, my daughter! He's perfect for you! He cares for you! (points to Paris)
Juliet

I don't want to marry him, father!

(Acting)Lord Capulet

(angrily) And why would that be?

Juliet

Romeo is my only love! My heart is for him and him only, and you can't change that!

(Acting) Lord Capulet

(shocked and angry)

My daughter is in love with such a man?! He's a murderer! How dare you love a man like him!

Juliet

He had his reason, father! You don't understand!

(Acting) Lord Capulet

(slaps Juliet) What has gotten into you?! You will marry only Count Paris! If you don't, then I
will disown you! Do you understand me, woman?!

Juliet

(crying on the floor) Yes… father… (leaves)

Narrator: Lord Capulet

I forced her to marry Count Paris. A year after they got married, Juliet gave birth to a boy. It
quickly became popular news.

Eventually, Juliet's secret lover has been spread throughout the city, but she was not been
stopped from marrying Count Paris.

Benvolio, who knew their secret about them being lovers heard about the birth as it was a talk on
the city.

Scene 9

(Acting) Female Witness/Civilian

(talking with another person) Hey, have you heard? Juliet just gave birth to a boy just recently!

Benvolio

(overhearing the conversation)

(shocked)

I cannot believe this! How can this be? Does Romeo know of this?

Narrator: Lord Capulet

He then wrote a message to Romeo informing him about the marriage.

The message reads (gets a copy of the letter):

Benvolio

"Romeo! I have some terrible news! It's about Juliet! She made love with Paris and gave birth to
a son!"
Narrator: Lord Capulet

Benvolio sends his letter to Romeo. As expected, Romeo receives the letter a few days later.

Romeo, in confusion after receiving the letter from Benvolio, opened it and was instantly
shocked.

Romeo

Why would she do this?! She made a promise!

I can't believe this! I refuse to believe this! I refuse!...(rips the letter)

Romeo starts shedding tears. He wants to commit suicide, but he realizes that death cannot bring
back his joy nor bring back his lover, Juliet.

Romeo

No, this is not right! Death won't solve anything. She broke our promise! She's no friend to me! I
will live a better life than her, she'll see!

Romeo has transformed his sorrow into pure hatred and has decided to forget everything about
her by focusing on his own goals.

Scene 10

Narrator: Lord Capulet

10 years after Romeo kills Juliet, Prince Escalus gives up on finding Romeo and doesn't care if
he ever comes back. He figures that Romeo must have lived on from the city and declared that
Romeo is no longer a threat to the city's peace.

Romeo

Romeo paces back and forth thinking about what had happened in Verona
Maybe, I should head back to Verona. I wonder what had happened while I was gone? Besides
that Forsaken- I shouldn't recall that, not anymore

I'll go order a boat ticket

Time would pass and Romeo got his ticket to get back to Verona

Act 3

Scene 11

Narrator: Female Witness/Civilian

I saw him. I saw Romeo walking on the streets, although no-one seemed to notice.

Romeo

Romeo reaches Verona and gets off the boat (entrance)

So this is it, Verona, after all these years of Exile it looks and feels the same.

I'm not even surprised…

Romeo would see Juliet in the distance with a child playing on the streets

Is that?

I should probably greet her just to be sure.

Romeo walked over to Juliet and taps Juliet on the shoulder

Hey… (He would say a depressingly)

Juliet
Huh?

Juliet would look over her Shoulder to see Romeo

Romeo?

(Juliet would stutter through this) It's good to see you, yeah…

Romeo

Yeah. It's good to see you too, it has been a while, hasn't it?

Juliet

(stutters) Oh, yes, it has been a while…

Romeo

So, did anything happen while I was gone?

Juliet

(She murmurs and stutters this out) No!

Romeo

Oh well, I guess that's it then, huh?

Well, that was a waste of my time, especially since you're a liar, who made love with another
man.

Juliet
Romeo, it was a misunderstanding, I didn't wan-

Romeo

Stop wasting my time, I can't bear to see this place any longer

Scene 12

Narrator: Female Witness/Civilian

He would sigh and rub his eyes, his expression would be quite down and saddened. You could
see how disappointed he is.

Juliet

Looking at Romeo

Voiceover: Juliet

I can see that he has let go… I did this… I bet he's doing good on his own and pushed forward
without me… Why can't I?

(sighs)

Scene 13

Juliet

Romeo...

Tries to hug him

Romeo

Startled, avoids the hug

What are you doing?

Juliet

I was wondering if, (stutters) you know, you could forgive me?

Romeo

visibly confused

What do you think? After marrying another man, having a son with him, and breaking a promise
that you swore to. Do you think that I could still accept your apology?

Juliet

I didn't mean it that way! Maybe let's just keep in touch instead?

Romeo

I have no plans, after all, you'll be busy with someone else other than me, I'm not wrong, am I?

Juliet

No, Romeo, I prom-

Romeo

You promise? Ha! Do you really think I can trust you with a small promise like this after you
betrayed me? I can't trust you anymore, Juliet. I have moved on.
I don't love you anymore Juliet.

Leaves her alone and walks away

Scene 14

Narrator: Female Witness/Civilian

His hatred for her has been building up for quite a long time, it would be impossible to replenish
his love for her.

Juliet

Pauses and thinks

(sobs quietly)

Voiceover: Juliet

This is all my fault…

Juliet

Romeo! Come here.

Let's go home, shall we?

Scene 15

Narrator: Female Witness/Civilian

Even when you have the greatest intentions, you can't change what you did in the past.
THERE NEVER WAS A STORY OF MORE WOE THAN THIS OF JULIET AND
ROMEO
