Male Catheterization

INTRODUCTION

1 Introduces themselves

2 Confirms patient details

3 Explains procedure & gains consent

4 Requests a chaperone

5 Gathers equipment

PREPARATION

6 Cleans trolley

7 Washes hands

8 Dons apron

9 Sets up sterile field

10 Positions patient appropriately

11 Washes hands again and dons sterile gloves

12 Places sterile absorbent pad beneath patient’s genitals

13 Cleans the penis

14 Discards gloves

15 Washes hands and dons new pair of sterile gloves

16 Places sterile drape over patient’s penis

17 Places sterile receiver below the penis

18 Inserts anaesthetic gel

INSERTING THE CATHETER

19 Removes tear away portion of the catheter wrapper

20 Holds the penis using some gauze with dirty hand

21 Inserts catheter tip into the urethral meatus with clean hand

22 Advances catheter until fully inserted

23 Observes for urine draining

24 Inflates balloon with 10mls of water

25 Withdraws catheter until resistance is felt

26 Attaches catheter bag to catheter

27 Places catheter below the level of the patient

28 Replaces the patient’s retracted foreskin


29 Cleans up the patient

30 Disposes of equipment appropriately

31 Allows patient privacy to get re-dressed

32 Thanks patient

33 Washes hands

34 Indicates need to document procedure
