Symth Reflection:

Describing:
During this practicum, I noticed a student who wouldn’t listen to me. He always
seemed to be off task and wanted to do whatever he felt like. Inspite of using
positive reinforcement and all the behaviour management strategies, the student
would just continue to do what he was doing. This in turn disrupted the learning
for the child and the other students. Other students would tell him off as well as
he was disturbing and annoying them. During mat time he would try to disturb
other students and was disrespectful of other students’ space. He would push
them and spread his legs out. Sometimes he would even lie down on the mat.

Informing:
When I was talking to the student, it seemed like I was talking to the wall. None of
my words and comments ever reached him. The more I tried the more he acted
out. Sometimes I would get so frustrated I’d end up telling him off. The only
person he would listen to was the associate teacher. Even though I used all the
behaviour management strategies I knew, nothing seemed to work.

Confronting:
I brought this situation up with my associate teacher he told me that this child
came from an immigrant family. His family was separated for a number of years
since the father came to New Zealand to try and settle here and bring his family
over. The moment the child and mother stepped into New Zealand they thought
they would not have any problems. However it was not like that. The child had
lost a lot of precious time with the father and developing that same relationship
was hard. I also came to know that the parents had been going through a divorce
which was affecting the child.

Reconstructing:
It is important to know where students are coming from, their families and what
is happening at home as this affects students in the classroom. When I do have
my own classroom one day I will make sure to get to know students on an
individual level and build relationships with them. This is the first step before any
learning can take place. The student listened to my associate teacher only
because he had developed a great rapport with the child since he had him for 2
years in his class. It would also be good to communicate with the parents to work
around other ways in which learning can occur and behaviour managed.
