Project Summary
Over the last few years the small town of Grass Lake Michigan has been growing
tremendously. Many new businesses are being introduced to downtown Grass Lake which is
slowly morphing from a once rather run-down looking street, to a picturesque small town. This is
an excellent time to establish a much needed and missing bakery. There is currently no place in
Grass Lake to purchase fresh bakery goods such as bread, donuts, cakes, or pastries. That is why
I plan on opening up a small bakery in the middle of down town. There are several vacant shops
in which to reside that could, without too much effort, be converted into a bakery.
Project Description
The bakery I plan on opening in Grass Lake will be small, but will provide a vast
selection of pastries and breads. All items sold at the shop will be baked fresh each day and if
they are not sold that day they will be either sold at a discounted price or donated to the nearest
food shelter.
While the majority of the products we will be selling will be along the lines of pastries
and cakes, it would be a major miscalculation to not sell any bread. The major kinds of bread that
we will sell will be basic loaf breads including: Sough dough, Rye, Whole Wheat, White, Marble
The next category of foods that we will sell will be donuts. Like our bread, our donuts
will be baked fresh every day. The donuts that we will make will include: glazed, cinnamon
sugar, French cruller, twist, jelly, cream, long john, and cinnamon rolls. We will also offer a
Next, we will have cakes and cupcakes. The kinds of cakes we will bake will be: Vanilla,
Devils food, carrot cake and red velvet. For icings we will make butter cream, rolled fondant,
whipped cream, vanilla icing, chocolate fudge, and chocolate mousse. While cupcakes will be
made on a daily basis our full size cakes will be made to order. We may provide a couple small
Wedding cakes will be another specialty of our bakery. Anyone wishing to order a
wedding cake can either choose a cake design from our picture book or design their own cake
completely. We will strive to offer wedding cakes that will fit every budget and taste. Delivery of
The next bake good category is cookies. We will bake three different varieties of cookies.
These will be chocolate chip, sugar, and oatmeal raisin. Additional baked goods that we will sell
will include: scones, muffins, and brownies. We will also sell drink like coffee, hot chocolate,
The Village Bakery will need two sets of staff. One will be bakers that work through the
night to bake our goods. The other half will be the sales staff. These individuals will work during
The bakery itself will also consist of several sections. The back of the bakery will be the
actual bakery or kitchen area. This will house multiple ovens, mixers, and other further baking
necessities. The next area will be the display or shelves in which we will put our finished
product. This will be a large class case that can be perused by customers, however they will need
staffs help to retrieve the goods they want. Adjacent to our display case will be a counter for
boxing up baked good and completing sales. The front of the bakery will consist of a small but
sufficient seating area for customer to sit, eat our pastries and enjoy each other’s company.
One of the goals of our business will be to use only Michigan made ingredients. We will
make it a priority to do most of our business with Michigan vendors. Another objective will be to
ensure that every bit of our merchandise is made from scratch. We will pride ourselves in having
Rationale
This bakery will be very successful for several reasons. First of all is its location. Grass
Lake currently has no bakery to speak of. The only place to get baked goods is at the local
grocery store. These baked goods are not homemade or baked on a daily basis. If residents of
Grass Lake wish to go to a bakery they must drive at least 15 minutes to the nearest one. Another
advantage of having my bakery here is that Grass Lake is a quickly growing town. New
businesses are coming to this town on a regular basis. Plus, Grass Lake is located between
several larger towns which means that there is quite a bit of traffic that goes through the town.
Another factor is that this bakery will be more extensive than any other in the
area. We will provide a wider selection of baked goods than most bakeries that usually restrict
themselves to either selling mainly donuts or bread. Also, we will offer made to order cakes for
everything from birthdays to weddings. This is another service that is currently hard to find in
the area. A customer may similarly make a special order for any of our baked goods.
The Village Bakery will also provide the community and passers by a nice spot to sit, eat,
drink and socialize. We plan to create a pleasant “dining area” for people to use.
Conclusion
In summary, the Village of Grass Lake is an excellent place to start up a new business
like a bakery. This bakery will be the only one in the area. Plus, other bakeries in nearby small
towns have been successful. Plus, our bakery will provide a greater selection of baked goods as
well as a pleasant eating environment. Not only will this business be successes for us but for the
Village of Grass Lake as we foresee that it will bring additional business to the town. In short,
we know that our business can be successful and hope that you will approve this business
