Introduction

At English Steps we provide a total immersion experience in the language and culture of
England. We are passionate about helping you improve your English.

Differences

– Why choose English Steps? –

1. All our courses include accommodation with qualified English teachers, and a minimum
of 70 hours per week practising English.
2. We have an average of just 3 students per class so our teachers can focus on your speaking
and listening and provide personal feedback. Most schools have an average class size of 8+
students per class!
3. Our activities, social events and work experience are designed to increase your English
speaking time, give you valuable experience for your CV, and also introduce to you the
culture of England!

Lessons

Focused, Interactive, Fun – Our lessons

We do not follow a coursebook like most schools. Instead our teachers provide lessons designed
to help you with the things you want and need to learn using a range of different textbooks, their
own materials and the local environment.

Every morning you will have 3 different teachers, exposing you to different accents, teaching
styles and personalities.  We use innovative techniques to improve your speaking and listening
skills in real-life situations. Because of the small group sizes, you will receive a lot of individual
attention in speaking and listening, but also reading and writing (especially as homework).

Our teachers have a lot of experience teaching various exams (PET, FCE, IELTS, TOEIC etc), Busi-
ness English, and also English for Medical, Academic or Legal purposes.

Remember - living with an English teacher means that any problems you have with your English
are instantly noticed, and your teachers will be advised on what topics to cover with you. In fact,
your lessons continue all day - we will be correcting you at lunch, dinner and in the evening!

Our Teachers
All the teachers at English Steps are qualified to Cambridge University CELTA level or above.
We have a team of teachers who have a lot of experience in many different areas: exam English,
medical and legal English, business English, and also teaching different levels from beginner to
advanced. Read about some of our teachers below:

Harry set up English Steps Courses in 2012 with

help from friends, colleagues and family. He
has a Law degree from Sheffield University and
an Oxford Trinity CertTESOL qualification in
teaching English (he is currently studying for
a masters level qualification part time). He
has experience teaching in private and public
schools in England, Morocco, Spain, Belgium and
Northern Ireland. Harry is interested in sports,
charity work and cinema.

Val loves her career as an ESOL teacher, having

gained her Trinity CertTESOL certificate in early
2012 following a previous long career in the
healthcare sector. Outside of work, Val enjoys
fellwalking, music and holidays.

Andy is CELTA qualified and has been teaching

General and Business English for the last 15
years and has trained teachers in grammar and
phonetics. He has taught in China, Poland,
Slovakia, Turkey, Chile, Colombia, Libya,
Russia,Vietnam and Sicily.

Accommodation
Each student has their own double room in one of our city centre apartments, including a desk
to work on. A qualified English teacher will be living in your apartment too, helping you to
learn English in your free time. All our apartments are in the same block so you can visit other
students and teachers. En suite bathrooms are available.

– Cooking –
We have chefs who prepare our food, and take into account any dietary requirements. We
believe that cooking and eating together is an important part of English culture and a good
opportunity to practise using your English, while eating great food! We welcome help from
students with new recipe ideas - especially for the international buffet on Friday evenings.

About Leeds
Leeds is the 3rd biggest city in England (population 750,000), and is much cheaper (and
friendlier!) than London. It has 3 universities, numerous historical buildings, great shopping
and even better night-life!

It has recently been voted ‘best place in Britain to live’, ‘Visitor city of the year’ and ‘Most cost-
effective place to study in Britain’

Leeds also has a fantastic location in the centre of England. You can travel to London (2h 20m),
Manchester (1h), and Edinburgh (3h) by train, or explore the fantastic national parks and
historical towns only 25km away. Our students normally travel to different places each weekend.

Activities

Afternoons
Every afternoon we organise different activities to help you use the English you have
learnt in your morning lessons. Accompanied by native English speakers you can go to
museums, visit historical cities, play games, and do practical workshops on interview
questions or speaking on the phone etc.

Evenings
In the evening we organise more social activities for you to do, always with native
English speakers. We do pub quizzes, movie nights, language exchanges, and more -
on all our activities you only pay for transport and entrance costs, but we try to have
free options available.

Weekends
Saturdays and Sundays are your free time. We help you organise trips and activities
so there is always something happening. You can also use our discount codes to go on
organised trips to different cities with www.citylife-leeds.com

Pierre M. Matéo

You have to choose English Steps for 3 reasons:

• The quality level of the lessons is excellent: each teacher adapts to your level and help you
improving with his own method. That is why having the opportunity to attend 3 different
classes a day is definitely a great way to develop your confidence in English
• You will never get bored: There are plenty of activities planned every single day. Some are
focused on English (language exchanges/ presentations...) but some others are fun-oriented
• You will live a real life experience: Thanks to Harry, the volunteers and the teachers, you can
be sure that you will be in an friendly environment. Everyone is integrated to this group,
speaks in English all the time so that there is no chance you can be by your own.

I only spent 2 weeks inside English Steps but I wish I could have stayed much longer.

Patrizia Lovisco

The best English course ever! Very talented, professional and amazing teachers! Harry and
all the volunteers were nice, gentle, friendly and helpful. I learnt a lot in these two weeks. It is
more than a course, it is a truly full immersion in English culture. It was a great experience
with great people!

When I decided to go to English Steps, at first I wasn’t really sure that an adult student like me
could have found such a perfect place to stay. The accomodation is in a perfect position, near
many pubs and the city centre. All the teachers use a different approach, but each activity is
really involving, funny and perfectly planned to improve your English. Lunch and dinner time
were my favourite, when you could speak in English with all the group. I met wonderful people
and, even though I stayed there for only one week, I realised how important this experience has
been both for my career and for my human development.

Giulia Benati

English Steps is a beautiful experience to improve English and meet new friends. I spent a
month at the school and I recommed it. Lessons are very interesting, fun and never boring, with
lot of different activities and games. And teachers are so friendly and lovely. I enjoyed living
with other students and English speakers and sharing everything during the day, afternoon
and evening activities and free time, all time speaking English. It’s impossible don’t improve
English! Leeds is a very nice and easy-going city with many places to visit; so you can spend your
free time around the city or exploring the Yorkshire region. I had a great experience thanks to
English Steps, Harry, all teachers and students!
