Air Pollution and Its Control

Home Assignment - 5
Year: 2019-20 Odd Semester

1. A highway carries 10000 cars per hour (5000 per hour each way) at an average speed
of 50mi/hr. The emission factor for CO is 3.4g CO/mi (this is only a fair approximation for
Cars going 50mi/hr, but should be used for this problem). The wind is blowing at a
velocity of 1 m/s at right angles to the highway. Assume the emissions from the autos
occur at ground level and all at the centerline of the highway. The stability category is C.
Estimate the concentration of CO 200 m downwind of the centerline of the highway.
Assume that the concentration upwind of the highway is zero.

2. A spherical particle with diameter 1μm and specific gravity 4.0 is settling in still air.
(a) What is the terminal settling velocity of this particle, according to Stokes' law?
(b) What is the terminal settling velocity of this particle, according to Stokes' law,
taking the Cunningham correction factor into account?

3. Calculate the stoichiometric A/F for a gasoline whose average formula is C7H16 . An auto
engine with this gasoline is operating withan A/F of 15.0 kg of air per kg of fuel. What is
the equivalence ratio and tell whether its a fuel lean or fuel rich scenario.
4.

Thoroughly examine the following figure of Agra-Mathura region. The wind direction is from
Mathura refinery is directly towards Tajmahal. In the upwind of the Tajmahal there are two
industrial areas and a national highway ( see the emission and meteorological details on the
figure). Under the atmospheric conditions E. Estimate the following :

A. 2 hr SO2 concentration contributed by Mathura refinery.

B. 2 hr SO2 concentration contributed by Industrial area ; and
C. 2 hr SO2 concentration contributed by National Highway.

Under the given conditions of emission and meteorology , will the 2 hr quality of 30 μg/m 3 be
met at Tajmahal ? If not, in your opinion what would be your priority in terms of pollution control
strategy, which may include ; cutting down the emission from (i) Mathura refinery (ii) industrial
source (iii) relocating the highway. ( It is only a simulated case for academic learning). See
stability class E.
