This document records measurements of a person's body parts and calculates ratios between distances. It measures the distance from the ground to the belly button, belly button to head, and ground to knees. It also measures hand length and distance from wrist to elbow. It calculates 5 ratios between these distances and records them in a table. The ratios are all close to 1.618, which is the golden ratio that is often found in nature and considered aesthetically pleasing.

The Golden Ratio

Measure the following:

• Distance from the ground to your belly button 95 cm
• Distance from your belly button to the top of your head 76 cm
• Distance from the ground to your knees 51 cm
• Distance:
A. 2.5 cm B. 2.5 cm C. 3 cm
• Length of your hand. 19cm
• Distance from your wrist to your elbow. 31cm

Calculate the following:

1. Distance from the ground to your belly button.
Distance from belly button to the top of your head
2. Distance from the ground to your belly button.
Distance from the ground to your knees.
3. Distance C
Distance B
4. Distance B
Distance A
5. Distance from your wrist to your elbow
Length of your hand
Solution:
Formula: A = A+B
B A

1. 95cm + 76cm =1.8

95cm
2. 95cm + 51cm =1.537
95cm
3. 3cm + 2.5cm =2.2
3cm
4. 2.5cm + 2.5cm =2
Cm
5. 31cm + 19cm =1.613
cm

Write all your results on the following table:

Ratio 1 Ratio 2 Ratio 3 Ratio 4 Ratio 5
1.8 1.537 2.2 2 1.613

Can you see anything special about these ratios? Explain your observations.

I see that the special thing about the ratios is that their values are close to one
another. The golden ratio is 1.618. If applied in the body, the ratios should be close to
this value.
