STUDENT GOVERNMENT
Academic Year 2014-2015

GUIDELINES FOR LITERARY MUSICAL COMPETITIONS

I. GENERAL RULES AND REGULATIONS


1. The academic competitions are open to all bona fide college students of Colegio San
Agustin – Bacolod who are officially enrolled in the department they represent as of the
current academic year and semester.
2. Contestants in ALL EVENTS SHOULD HAVE PASSED THE 60% OF THE
ENROLLED SUBJECTS FOR THE PREVIOUS SEMESTER AND MUST BE
ENROLLED AT LEAST 12 UNITS FOR THE CURRENT AND PREVIOUS
SEMESTER, 9 UNITS FOR GRADUATING STUDENTS CERTIFIED BY THE
DEAN. (SUMMER IS NOT INCLUDED)
3. Contestants must have good moral standing. They should not have been involved in any
untoward incident that would have marred their names or the good name of their
department and the school in general.
4. First prize winners in the previous Literary Musical Competition as well as contestants
who have won first place in Regional or National competition or have represented the
country in any International contest are DISQUALIFIED to participate in the same event.
However in group and pair events, if the department wishes to retain some participants,
the number will be limited to 50% of the total members.
5. Duly accomplished official entry forms must be submitted to the office of the Vice
President for Student Affairs and External Relation on or before August 5, 2014, 8:00
pm. Failure to comply or submit is tantamount to disqualification.
6. Each department must have only one entry in each category and participants must join in
only one category with the exception of the College of Nursing. Their participants are
allowed to join in two different competitions.
7. Coaches and/or trainers of the participants may come from within or outside the school.
8. In case of a tie in the ranking system, the point system will be used as the first option and
the second option is the chairman’s decision. Deliberation is allowed only after the
second option had been done.
9. The contestants and/or authorized representatives are prohibited from contacting any of
the judges in connection with the ratings. For records purposes, judges’ ratings must be
submitted to the VPSAER office one week after the completion of the competitions.
10. For purpose of impartiality and objectivity, the members of the Board of Judges must not
come from any of the participating departments with contestants in any of the categories.
11. The decision of the Board of Judges is final and irrevocable.
12. No member of the Performing Arts will be allowed to join in any event of their field. No
chorale member can join in any musical events, in the same way that no dance troupe
member can join in any dance events. Theatre members are not allowed to join the
Character Impersonation competition. As for the band, since they have no specific field
of expertise with respect to the competitions, they will be allowed.
13. Any violation on the general and specific guidelines would mean DISQUALIFICATION
after thorough deliberation by the Technical Committee.

II. APPLICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS


1. Requirements for the following events should be submitted to the technical committee on
the scheduled day of submission (5 copies for each)
i. Contest Piece – Oration, Talumpati, Binalaybay, Character Interpretation

ii. Repertoire – Vocal Solo Classical, Vocal Solo OPM, Vocal Duet OPM
iii. Literature – Folk Dance (Rural – Open)
2. All contest pieces must be computerized, double-spaced and must be printed in a short
size bond paper.
3. Age limit of contestants should not be more than 23 years old before the competition. If
the department wishes to submit participants who are older than the specified age, they
are only limited to three participants and these participants are only allowed to join in
group events.

III. PERFORMANCE AND TIMING


1. There shall be two (2) official time keepers to keep track and record the
performance/time of each contestant. The authorized department representative may sit
beside the timekeeper only during the performance of their contestant.
2. The official timekeepers shall be responsible of submitting to the board of judges the time
excess and time short of the requirements for each contestant.

IV. REGISTRATION AND PERFORMANCE


All contestants must be registered one (1) hour before the contest proper. Thirty (30)
minutes before the contest proper, contestants must stay in the assigned room.
V. RULES AND PROVISIONS FOR DISQUALIFICATIONS
If the contestant arrives already after his/her turn in the order of performance, he/she may
be allowed to perform after all contestant has performed but will no longer be considered
contestant.

SPECIFIC RULES

I. IMPROMPTU SPEECH/DAGLIANG PAGBIGKAS


1. Specific topics or questions will be prepared before the start of the competition.
2. Each contestant shall draw a specific topic or question three minutes before the
delivery of his/her speech.
3. Each contestant is given three minutes to prepare and three minutes to deliver his/her
speech. The timer will raise a green flag 30 seconds before the end of the time limit.
A red flag will be raised at the end of the six-minute time limit.
4. One point deduction from each judge for every ten (10) seconds exceeding or if less
than the time limit, a fraction of at least five (5) seconds being considered as ten (10)
seconds.
5. The style of the delivery may be conversational, oratorical or a combination of both;
however, the speech must have an introduction, body and conclusion.
6. The criteria for judging are as follows:

1. Content 40%
a. Substance or relevance to the theme
b. Organization
c. Provocativeness/comprehensiveness
2. Delivery 30%
a. Voice
b. Articulation/pronunciation
3. Craftsmanship 20%
a. Use of appropriate language
b. Stage presence
4. Personality 10%
a. Body behaviour
b. Posture/gesture
c. Eye contact

II. ORATION/TALUMPATI
1. The speech of the contestant must be based on a theme to be provided before the
competition
2. All pieces must be original.
3. The delivery time must be between five (5) minutes and seven (7) minutes. The timer
will raise a green flag 30 seconds before the end of the time limit. A red flag will be
raised at the end of the seven-minute time limit.
4. Appropriate clothing should be used.
5. One point deduction from each judge for every ten (10) seconds exceeding or if less
than the time limit, a fraction of at least five (5) seconds being considered as ten (10)
seconds.
6. Five copies shall be submitted to the contest organizers on a specified date of
submission.
7. The criteria for judging are as follows:

c. Persuasiveness

III. VOCAL SOLO COMPETITION


1. The piece must be an original Pilipino music (OPM) in English or Filipino.
2. The participant shall be accompanied by a minus one CD, which may or may not
have back-up singers. Multiplex however is not allowed.
3. Rendition must be limited to five minutes only.
4. Lyrics and name of the artist should be submitted in 5 copies during the specified date
of submission.
5. The criteria for judging are as follows:

 Tone quality 40%


 Interpretation/delivery/dynamics 40%
 Stage presence (deportment/bearing/discipline) 20%

* OPM refers to a popular Filipino music commercially released through various means of mass
media (records, tapes, etc.) and espoused by popular music personalities.
* Professional means one who is a regular entertainer and occasional performer who is paid for
his/her services either in money or in kind. Violation of this rule is a ground for disqualification.

IV. VOCAL DUET COMPETITION


1. The piece must be an original Pilipino music (OPM) in English or Filipino.
2. The participants shall be accompanied by a minus one CD, which may or may not
have back-up singers. Multiplex however is not allowed.
3. Rendition must be limited to five minutes only.
4. Lyrics and name of the artist should be submitted in 5 copies during the specified date
of submission.
5. The criteria for judging are as follows:

 Tone quality (vocal projection and diction) 40%


 Blending and interpretation/counterpoint 40%
(voice quality, expression, delivery)
 Stage presence 20%

V. VOCAL SOLO – Filipino Classical


1. The piece must be a Filipino classical composition
2. The lyrics must be in any Filipino dialect.
3. The soloist must sing with live piano accompaniment.
4. Popular songs (pop music) are not allowed.
5. Transposition is NOT allowed.
6. The criteria for judging are as follows:

 Tone 35%
(Tone Quality, Flexibility, Range)
 Musicianship 30%
(Interpretation, Melody, Tempo, Style, Dynamics)
 Diction 10%
(Clarity of sounds, vowels and consonants)
 Piece 10%
(Difficulty, Quality, Suitability to singer’s range
 Stage Deportment 15%
TOTAL 100%

VI. BINALAYBAY
1. The piece must be in Hiligaynon, in poetry form and must focus on the theme.
2. The delivery time must be between five (5) minutes and seven (7) minutes. The timer
will raise a green flag 30 seconds before the end of the time limit. A red flag will be
raised at the end of the seven-minute time limit.
3. One point deduction from each judge for every ten (10) seconds exceeding or if less
than the time limit, a fraction of at least five (5) seconds being considered as ten (10)
seconds.
4. Microphone must be used. The same microphone shall be used by all the contestants.
5. Props, character make-up or changing of costume is not allowed.
6. The criteria for judging are as follows:

Content (Kaundan) 40%


Internalization (Internalisasyon) 20%
Delivery (Pagpabutyag) 20%
Mastery (Pagsaulo o Paglagpat) 10%
Stage Presence (Pagpasundayag sa Entablado) 10%
TOTAL 100%

* The term BINALAYBAY is operationally defined in order to establish a common


interpretation. Binalaybay is a type of oral recitation in poetry form, wherein the speaker recites
the verses in rise and fall pattern.
* The piece may be in free verse or in rhyme.

VII. CHARACTER INTERPRETATION


1. Contest pieces should be in the first person. The language of the piece must be limited
to either English or Filipino or a combination of both.
2. The character to be interpreted should be one which is open to several possible
interpretations. Actual persons with well-defined characteristics (physical appearance,
mannerism, and speech patterns) known to the general public is not allowed.
Historical persons found in literature but whose exact actual physical attributes are
not known may be allowed.
3. Microphone(s) must be used by each contestant. He/she may or may not use the
microphone stand. He/she is allowed to roam around the stage provided he/she does
not go down to the audience area neither leave the stage empty at one time. Lapel
microphone is preferred.
4. The delivery time must be between five (5) minutes and seven (7) minutes. The time
of the performance starts with the first word uttered or the first dramatic action,
whichever comes first. The timer will raise a green flag 30 seconds before the end of
the time limit. A red flag will be raised at the end of the seven-minute time limit.
5. One point deduction from each judge for every ten (10) seconds exceeding or if less
than the time limit, a fraction of at least five (5) seconds being considered as ten (10)
seconds.
6. Props, character make-up or use of costume is allowed. Secondary characters/actors
(such as other persons or animals) are not allowed. Sets are likewise prohibited. The
term “props” shall be defined as anything that can be lifted by one hand for an
unlimited length of time. Only the contestant shall be allowed to bring in and out their
props on stage.
7. Pyrotechniques and confetti poppers or such materials difficult to clean up after are
prohibited.
8. The final characters should be submitted on the specified date of submission.
9. Male or female characters should be interpreted by a male and female performer
respectively; violation of the rules is subject to disqualification.
10. The criteria for judging are as follows:

Interpretation and Delivery 40%


Pronunciation, Diction, Enunciation 25%
Mastery of the Piece 15%
Suitability of the Piece 10%
Stage Presence 10%

* Character interpretation is defined as the artistic interpretation of a particular character and


should not be confused with character impersonation or mimicry.
* Actual persons with documented footage in other words motion pictures or videos are not
allowed for character interpretation.
* Language and actions used must be free (historical and fictional) from vulgarities. Crimes,
violence, perversions and lewd scenes should not be exaggerated; rather the triumph of good
over evil should be highlighted.
* The judges reserve the right to disqualify a contestant on the basis of non-adherence of the
above stated criteria.

VIII. HIPHOP
1. Each group shall be composed of a minimum of eight (8) and a maximum of fifteen
(15) dancers.
2. Groups are permitted to mix and bring music of their choice on a standard CD.
3. The routine must be performed in its entirety to the music selected, prepared and
submitted by the group.
4. The contest piece must be three (3) minutes but not more than five (5) minutes. There
will be a one point deduction from each judge for every five (5) second exceeding.
5. Groups should include in their performance a broad selection of street dance styles
without excessive use of the same move or pattern. A varied range of styles should be
shown in choreography or arm, leg and body movement.
6. Attire may include accessories such as hats, caps, gloves, scarves, jewelries, etc.
Removing pieces of clothing that will cause indecency during the performance is
not allowed. Appropriate clothing should be observed in the competition.
7. Movements that are categorized under break dance are permitted but should not
control/dominate the performance.
8. Any move where the competitor’s weight is solely on the neck/head – head spins,
head stands – is not allowed. Tossing and throwing are not allowed. Violation of the
rules would mean disqualification.
9. Performance should be done on stage.
10. No sets or structures, pyrotechniques, fireworks and popper are allowed.
11. The criteria for judging are as follows:

a. Performance 30%
b. Choreography 20%
c. Technique/style 20%
d. Rhythm/timing 20%
e. costume 10%

IX. PHILIPPINE FOLK DANCE


1. The dance must be taken from a published Philippine Folkdance authorized by
Francisca Reyes Aquino and Libertad V. Fajardo or any researched dances
enumerated below approved by the Cultural Center of the Philippines or Philippine
Folk Dance Society. The following are the specific titles of books approved by the
Regional Schools Sports Council for further references:
a. Philippine Folk Dances from Pangasinan Volume 1 by Jovita Sison Friese
b. Ilongggo Folk Dances by Petronila Suarez
c. Philippine National Dances by F. Reyes Tolentino
d. Philippine Folk Dances Volume 1-6 by F. Reyes/Aquino
e. Handumanan-Capiz Folk Dances by Jose B. Balecana
f. Sayaw-Dances of the Philippine Island Volume 1-6 by Philippine Folk Dance
Society
g. Published Ethnic and Cordillera Dances
2. In dances where the author does not specify or describe the entrance and exit steps,
the trainer may create such. However entrance and exit steps must not be longer than
the dance itself, and both are limited to one (1) minute.
3. The literature of the dance should be submitted to the Technical Committee during
the specified date of submission. Five copies should be submitted.
4. The dance should be accompanied by CD/Tape recorded music. Live band should not
be used.
5. Dancers should be in four (4) pairs, all males/females or a combination of both.
Therefore only dances from among the books listed above with four pairs shall be
performed.
6. The criteria for judging are as follows:

a. Performance 50%
 Stage projection, grace and poise (15%)
 Skill and Mastery of Performance (20%)
 Showmanship, expression and precision (15%)
b. Interpretation 30%
(Authentic Interpretation of Dance Literature)
c. Authenticity 10%
 Costume (4%)
 Music (3%)
 Props (3%)
d. Difficulty of the Dance 10%
