THE TIMES OF INDIA

The Times of India is an Indian English-language daily newspaper owned by The Times Group.
It is the third-largest newspaper in India by circulation and largest selling English-language daily
in the world according to Audit Bureau of Circulations.

We have taken TOI Ahmedabad edition for our comparative analysis here,.

SECTIONS:

 National news- The first page of the paper is an amalgamation of news from various parts of the
country, as well as glimpses of news from other categories as well, which would continue later
in their individual section. There are 2-3 pages dedicated to this section.
 Local news- Local news which focuses on news confined to the city boundaries comes under the
title TIMES CITY and is given 2-3 pages. Apart from this, there is also a section which covers
other parts of the states.
 Global news- The news from around the world is gives 1 to 2 pages and covers important news
from overseas. It might be related to international relations, music, pop culture, movies etc.

 Editorial, opinion piece, column- Times publishes its views on current events, both local and
national on its editorial page. This is where letters to the editor, political cartoons,
and editorials unsigned commentary that reflects the collective position of the newspaper's
editorial board appear. Some newspapers limit letters to a certain number of words – maybe
150 or 300 while others publish letters of virtually any length.

Editorials are not news, but rather reasoned opinion based on facts. For example, editorials may
criticize the performance of public officials such as the mayor, the police chief or the local school
board; conversely, editorials may praise others for their civic contributions. Whatever the topic,
newspapers hope their editorials will raise the level of community discourse.

 Political and business news- There is comprehensive information about business and politics
under local new, national news, global news as well as their own sections.
Apart from the regular business news, TIMES PERSONAL FINANCE is a space dedicated to
investment, pension, funding, insurance related information.
 Weather news- While TOI online regularly posts weather updates, the printed version does not
have a section for it.
 Horoscope- A horoscope is an astrological chart or diagram representing the positions of the
Sun, Moon, planets, astrological aspects, and sensitive angles at the time of an event, such as
the moment of a person's birth. While it is not regularly seen in the print version, it is put up in
the online version.
 Entertainment- A special section is dedicated to this category. A short review of an upcoming
movie is also posted on a weekly basis on the second or third page. 2 pages are dedicated to this
field which has information related to the film, tv series industry featuring interviews, gossips
etc.
 Advertorial and display ads- An advertorial is an entire supplement meant for ads and some
news in between. TOI publishes advertorials of 4-5 pages front and back.
 Photo story- Mostly all the news featuring in the paper are photo stories which have either an
actual photograph or a cartoon accompanying it.
 Obituaries- This section takes one or half a page where the family members of the deceased one
post messages of remembrance or funeral information.

 Comic strips- The time of India has a very interesting new feature strip name “Agent Rana”
based on an Indian secret agent. Apart from this, it has Peanuts, Dilbert, Garth among others.
There are also cartoons and strips based on current political issues and on social humour based
on conditions the country is facing.
These provide a light take on current issues.
Display ads:
A display ad, also known as a banner ad, is a form of online paid advertising that is typically a designed
image or a photo and copy. The times of India has often been criticized for the high frequency of
advertisements posted by them. Apart from the class field, there are near about 20-25 ads on display on
an average if we take it on a weekly basis. The front page often has a full page ad (sometimes front and
back). Apart from this, there are supplements which have numerous ads as well. In some cases, there
are advertisements on almost all the pages.

Pattern of pagination:
News briefs and digest Local newsState newsNational news Opinions and Epiphany of
ideasGlobal newsBusiness newsFinance news Sports news

The times of India follows this general pattern in its regular newspapers with minor additions in
between. There might be a movie review, a comic strip, an occasional section (like EDUCATION TIMES)
but this is smoothly followed.

Supplements:
It is printed materials which has news context and is distributed free with newspaper. Newspaper
supplement has softer news than news in main newspaper.

Times has a very creative and informative range of supplements. The normal newspaper is accompanied
by Ahmedabad times which is a unique take on the city. It has different sections in it specifically meant
for tradition, culture, food, and entertainment confined to the city. There are several events which take
place in a big city like Ahmedabad, and supplements like these offer a lighter and insightful take.

There’s also Times Life- The main focus is on grooming, fashion, trends, health & fitness, style and things
related to it. Some more themes included in this section are relationship and travel. If the reader gets
tired and frustrated from the mainstream news, such supplements could prove to be a stress buster
with their unique and beautiful themes.
ADVERTISEMENT CAMPAIGNS:
Advertising in Times of India newspaper is a good source to reach to wide audience. It has good
readership among all newspapers. It covers spending readers who generally take action and respond to
advertisements.

A very recent event which was pretty much everywhere in the paper was the Vibrant Gujarat trade
show, of which Ahmedabad shopping festival was also a part. This event saw heavy marketing and press
releases where full pages were dedicated to them.
