Technology

The document discusses how people have become overly dependent on technology. It describes a YouTube video about a man named Arthur who was diagnosed with technophobia but still felt dependent on technology. The document argues that while technology has benefits, it is important that people not rely on it for everything and learn to enjoy non-digital activities as well, like spending time with family and friends in person. Now many children spend more time using devices than playing outdoors, and some people feel anxiety without constant access to the internet or phones. However, there are still useful alternatives to technology for communicating and passing time that can be better for physical and mental health.

“Life Without Technology”

“Cyprien - Technophobe,” a YouTube video uploaded by French Youtuber,

Cyprien, in 2015, talks about Arthur who was addicted to technology. He was
diagnosed with technophobe or the allergy to technology. Despite needing and
wanting to use technological devices, his condition hindered him from doing so. This
made him do activities that did not need any battery or power source, interact with
more people in real life, and enjoy life using manual objects. The video is applicable
today because many people have become overly dependent on technology, rather
than realizing that not everything should be relied on it.

Technology is “the application of scientific knowledge to the change and

manipulation of the human environment” (“Technology,” 2019) which includes
anything that has electronic data. That application of scientific knowledge has
expanded so much globally in the past few decades. As of July 2019, 56% of the entire
global population or about 4.33 billion people use the Internet. This suggests that the
majority of the Earth’s population is exposed to technology.

It is no doubt that the scientific advancements have shaped the human race
into what it is today. The fact that many have their lives fully depending on what
technology has to offer proves the previous statement to be correct. Arthur’s and his
friends’ lives were too dependent on high-tech devices. Rather than informing each
other in real life, his friend used Facebook and texted him to tell about the party he
was invited at. Nowadays, playgrounds have become empty because children have
access to smartphones and tablets. The instant thought of taking photos and videos
instead of allowing oneself to enjoy. The absence of an Internet connection or a phone
results to anxiety. Time management is lost when online. Calculators are being used
even for simple calculations. All that were mentioned show that one can really be
overdependent on technology.

Manual objects can also prove to be as useful and beneficial as those that are
high-tech. Arthur held a party with his friends without needing to use any electronics.
He was also able to bond with his grandmother by playing cards with her. One can
also apply this too. Walking by foot, which has health benefits, is a great alternative
instead of using a car to drive to a place 500 meters away. Reading a printed book
instead of an electronic one gives the eyes a break and helps in avoiding distraction.

It is not the innovators’ fault that this is the state of human beings. Technology
is amoral which means that how people use it is their responsibility and not
technology’s. One cannot deny that it also brought good effects in the society.
Communicating became easier through apps like Messenger, Skype, and Gmail.
Shopping can be done inside one’s home through online shopping apps. Looking for
an article about a topic does not need to involve going to the library because of search
engines such as Google and Bing.

Technology has significantly helped the human race in doing tasks easily. It
prioritizes the comfort of its consumers. As a result, a lot of people rely on it too much,
making it hard for them to live a day without making use of electronic devices. Despite
this, one should never forget that there are many resources that can be used as an
alternative for technology. Some of which are better for keeping the body and
relationships healthy. To live a life without technology may not be the norm, but it has
the capacity to change a person’s way of thinking on how simple things like
communicating and gaining knowledge can be done.
