According to EMDAT natural disaster are naturally occurring physical

phenomena caused by rapid or slow onset events which can be geophysical

(earthquakes, landslides, tsunamis, and volcanic activity,) hydrological such as floods,

climatological (extreme temperatures, drought and wildfires), meteorological

(cyclones and storms/wave surges) or biological (disease epidemics and insect/animal

plaques). Human-made disasters are those caused by negligent or deliberate human

action.

“We cannot stop natural disasters but we can arms ourselves with knowledge:

so many lives would’nt have to be lost if there was enough disaster preparedness”-

Petra Nemcova. Preparedness is understanding and knowing the things that you

should do when disasters come. How can you help yourself? your love ones? and the

community? How ready are you when things get worst? Self- preparedness is a must

in facing these incidents.

Our government, with the help of many agencies go hand in hand in planning

and preparing for each calamities and disasters. The City of Escalante join hand in

hand with the Schools Division Office of Escalante City in planning and preparing its

constituents especially the students in the face of disasters. Teaching disaster

preparedness in school is done through earthquake drill, fire drill and other first aid

and emergency trainings are also facilitated to teachers and students in order for them

to be equipped and knowledgeable in handling situations brought about by disastrous

events.

As a student, each drill must be understood and undertaken seriously. It is a

positive vehicle in keeping ourselves safe and in a way we can also help our family on

what to do, such in the event of earthquake. Because as I observed, during quarterly
practice of these drills, some students are just making it for fun. Disaster is no big fun

at all. More so, it is not funny to lose lives. Facing disasters is a matter of life and death

situations. It is very important to know how to handle things when in dire needs while

waiting for the first responders. I want to encourage students like me to perform each

drill seriously. By doing so, we can be able to prepare ourselves on untoward incidents,

calamities and disasters. We can also share our knowledge in disaster preparedness

to our friends, neighbors, and to the community as a whole.

It is the goal and mission of every learning institution to give us students, a

holistic kind of education. And this is a useful platform for us to grow in all aspects in

life. Yes, it is important for us to use and enhance our cognitive skills, likewise it is also

important to develop our motor skills. During earthquake, typhoons, fire, and any other

disasters our abilities in thinking and doing the exact things are needed.

More importantly, aside from being prepared it is also a must for us to do some

alternative solutions such as changes in our actions and a positive mindset to control

if not stop some calamities brought about by mankind. Floods can be avoided if only

people are aware of the consequences of their actions. Reforestation can also save

us from flood and many negative effects of global warming, such as long drought or

El Niἧo and La Niἧa. I can cite an example of this through the advocacy of Gina Lopez

in cleaning and greening our environment. Her unwavering eagerness through a lot

of programs to help and support reviving the life of nature inspired me. Yes, we have

no control over natural disaster but we can help lessen or reduce the occurrence of

man-made disasters. In school setting practice, the proper waste disposal is one way

of the best way to start saving our planet. It is a simple thing to do but when you do it

with love and discipline, it will be a big help already. Let us love mother Earth so that

she will love us back in return.

We cannot tell or predict on when a disasters strike us. Aside from our faith in

our Devine Providence, we can only rely on our readiness and preparedness. Every

family must provide themselves an emergency kit and a food kit. I can see the effort

of the government in their plans and management on, during and after a disaster is

being given utmost attention. Evacuation plan, refugee operation food and relief goods

must be discussed and be given at the most possible time.

All plans and support from the government during this scenario is covered in

Republic Act No. 10121, known as the "Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and

Management Act of 2010”. An act strengthening the Philippine Disaster Risk

Reduction and Management System, providing for the National Disaster Risk

Reduction and Management Framework and institutionalizing the National the

National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Plan, appropriating the funds

therefore and for other purposes.
