THE EFFECTS OF INTERNET OF GRADE 10 – MABINI

STUDENTS IN KALIAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

I.THE PROBLEM

Introduction

The advent of the internet in the 1190s led to major development in the world of

communication hence the introduction of social networking sites (SNS’s) .The coming of these sites

revolutionized to world of communication and today we celebrate its improvements ranging from

education to entertainment.

As we know ,nothing is interesting is ever completely one sided , so it is for internet use as it

comes with both positive and negative effects .it is an undeniable fact that both computers and internet

have become one of most important achievements of modern society. They bring their own revolution

in human daily life (Science, education, information, entertainment, etc.) eliminating the distances and

offering immediate and easily access to information and communication. With the continuous

development of new technologies, the internet users are able to communicate anywhere in the world to

shop online, use it as educational tool, work remotely and carry out financial transaction with various

services offered by banks. The infinite possibilities that are offered by the internet can often lead users

to abuse it, or to use it for malicious purposes against of the users, organizations and public services.

With the rapid spread and growth of the internet, they have appeared some social phenomena such as

cyber bullying, internet pornography, grooming through social network, cyber suicide, internet addiction

and social isolation, racism on the web. Moreover, there is always the risk of any sort of fraud

exploitation by the so called experts of technology systems who use internet as a mean to carryout

illegal acts.
Internet helps a wide range of the researchers and the students to satisfy their information

needs with no physical presence in the libraries or other information centers. Most of the people spend

a lot of time of the non-purposeful search in the internet in the process of searching and developing the

knowledge boundaries in the universities but also causes in the internet addiction. Some studies on

information that is not found in the printed resources. Students use internet more than other people do

in order to meet their educational needs, the excessive use of the internet causes the dangers of the

improper use of the internet, education problems, and the lack of participation in the curriculums for

the student. Internet addiction may have serious consequences such as changing the lifestyle in order to

spend more time on the internet, ignoring the individual’s health and main activities, reducing the social

relationships, ignoring the family and friends, financials and finally, financial, educational and physical

problems.

Internet is a collection of millions of computer around the world that are connected between

each other, the internet is a medium that does not have the limitation of the information on each user,

many people are highly dependent on the internet is because the internet has many advantages that

can simplify a lot of work, the internet is helpful for effectiveness and efficiency. Internet has

contributed so much to society company , industry , education and government , communication ,

publication, as well as a means to obtain the information needed by everyone , especially among

students who are essentially still in the process of self , is still full or flavor curious and unstable.

In summary our research topic is all about the effects of internet surfing to the

students in terms of their studies, health, and behavior, therefore, this study is helpful to analyze this

phenomenon.

Background of the study


As we know, nothing is interesting is ever completely one sided, so it is for internet use as it comes with

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM


This study will conducted to determine the effects of internet surfing of Grade X –
Mabini students in Kalian National High School who are enrolled in S.Y. 2019-2020.

Specially, it will seek to answer the following questions:

1. What is the effect of internet surfing to the students in terms of their;

a. Studies

b. Health

c. Behavior

2. How does the internet addiction affect students?

3. What are the problems faced by students in using internet services?

SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY


This study focuses on the effects of internet surfing of Grade X – Mabini students.

The data collection will be conducted to 10% of the total population in Grade X – Mabini students in

Kalian National High School for the school year 2019-2020 who will represent the population. This study

will not cover others problems that are not consider as one of the effects of internet surfing. The other
students which do not fall as part of Grade X – Mabini students are not within the scope of this research

. The study would the researchers will be able to know the effects of internet surfing to the Grade X –

Mabini students in Kalian National High School

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result of this study will benefit the students, teachers, parents, other researchers,

and the school principal who build more efficient training to raise the learning interest in the part of

students.

Students: the study will help the students to be aware the effects of internet surfing and

encourage them to study their lessons instead of using internet.

Teachers: this study will serve as their basis in considering the learning style of students. It

provides them on insights another strategy to imply in order to build the interest of the students in terms

of using book or lecture materials than using internet.

Parents: This will help them realize what they need to do with the study habit of their children .

Future researchers: this will serve as their guide and reference .

Principal: it will help him/her identity the lapses of the school.

DEFINITION OF KEY TERMS

Internet – an electronic communications network that connects computer networks and

organizational computer facilities around the world.


Pornography – movies , pictures , magazines , etc. that show or describe naked people or sex

in a very open and direct way in order to cause sexual excitement.

Social Networking - the activity of creating personal and business relationships with other

people especially by sharing information , personal , messages , etc. on the internet .

Cyberbullying – the electronic posting of mean spirited messages about a person ( such as a

student) often done anonymously.

Racism – poor treatment of or violence against people because of their race.

Surfing – the activity of looking for information or interesting things on the internet.
CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

INTRODUCTION

The use of internet grants its users great awareness of the importance of the world

around them. The internet is a platform for several types of information. It used by the students

including secondary students (Akin-Adaemola, 2014). Internet usage will continue to grow as long as it

users are not denied easy access (Olarokun, 2008). Recent statistics indicate that the internet gives

people the option to access information sites as well as other sites such as social media sites, internet

games , and cyber-sex (Siraj et al. 2015). A study by Ellore et al. (2014) on the influence of internet

usage on academic performance and face to face communication revealed that as a result of the

availability of internet, most students have had access to Internet on their cellphones. This helps

student to broaden their academic knowledge (Siraj, et al.,2015). The use of computer and access to

online resources according to Akende and Bamise (2019) are comparatively important to student.

Yesilyurt et al. (2014) showed that access to a home computer and internet connection

contributes to students’ academic performance as well as self-learning skills. Considering access and
usage of the internet by secondary school student in Nigeria, Olatokun (2008) indicated that most

students believed the internet to be far better and convenient than their school libraries. The study

pointed out that students see the internet as a source for general knowledge, and it really helps them

improve their reading habits leading to an improvement in their academic performance. Siraj et al.

(2015)affirmed that student perceived the internet as a supplement for learning and thus contributes

to higher academic feat. Ogedebe (2012) agreed that majority of students obtain relevant information

such as academic materials from the internet. The suggests 6 that student use the internet to enhance

their study. Sahin et al.(2010)examined the use of internet resources by university student during their

course project study. They argued that the use of trustworthy internet resources is of vital importance

for academic study, especially in higher class courses which require an academic review of literature.

Internet use for educational purpose is found is by Kim (2011) to be the habit of adolescent academic

achievement. A similar study conducted by Ruth and Adedotun (2015) posited that the source and

access to information can influence the academic performance of secondary school student.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter of our research presents the research design, research locale, research participants,
research intruments and data gathering procedure.

Research Design

This study the descriptive correlation research design. This design is considered appropriate because it
used questionnaire as the main method in gathering data.

Research locale

This study will be conducted I the municipality of margos particularly in kalian National High school to
the grade 10 mabeni students who are enrolled in this school yaer 2019 -2020.

Research Respondents

The respondents of this study will be the Grade 10 mabeni students school year 2019-2020.
Research Sampling Technique

In this study the researchers will use the purposive sampling technique in which the respondents will be
the senior high.The population of grade 10 mabeni students in Kalian National High School.

Research Instrument

In conducting this the study the researchers will use the questionnaire that untilized and justified the
survey being employed to the grade 10 mabeni students of kalian National High school as the
respondents of this study.

Data Gathering Procedure

The data gathering procedure will be done by the respondents through asking permission from the class
adviser and to all the respondents. Upon the approval of
